Olympics ‘free’ to current Foxtel sports subscribers

Foxtel has boldly announced that its current sports subscribers won't be paying any extra for the London Games.

Foxtel has boldly announced that its current sports subscribers won’t be paying any extra for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Foxtel will provide eight brand new, dedicated London 2012 Channels, 24 hours a day across 17 days of competition.

Speaking at the 2012 ASTRA Conference yesterday, Foxtel Chief Executive, Richard Freudenstein, said: “I am delighted to announce that Foxtel will offer our full Olympic Games coverage at no extra charge to every Foxtel residential sports subscriber.

“We will produce the best coverage of the Olympic Games in our country’s broadcast history.  We are making it available across eight High Definition and Standard Definition digital channels, and we are doing all of this at no additional charge for our residential sports customers.

“Foxtel’s commitment to this groundbreaking coverage of London 2012 is a great example of how we are continuing to innovate and add value for our consumers.  This investment is a massive increase in what we offer for a Foxtel subscription.”

Foxtel has previously announced it will also screen all 302 gold medal events.

“For the first time, every magic gold medal moment will be brought home to Australia live.  We will play 1,100 hours of live competition for the very first time and more than 3,200 hours overall.”

Coverage will also be made available over companion devices, including tablets.

“This means you will be able to watch your favourite Olympic sports on your own tablet device over wireless and 3G also at no additional charge for Foxtel sports subscribers.”

Foxtel is yet to reveal its pricing for non-sports subscribers and new subscribers.

Full broadcast plans, host and commentary teams will be revealed on April 18th.

  1. Austar will be waiting to see if the merger with Foxtel is approved before making any announcements – if the merger goes through, the Olympics will be free to Austar subscribers as well.

  2. great news i wasnt expecting that i would have paid for it if i had to it would have been worth it not to have to put up with eddie or karl but getting it for free makes it even better knowing i dont have to pay any extra to be karl and eddie free

  3. @BigVic

Austar hasn’t announced its plans for London 2012 yet. I am holding out hope they come out and say the same thing Foxtel has. Austar is always slower in releasing information.

  4. I feel sorry for Austar/Telstra customers being shafted.

Basic + Sports + HD (no movies or docos) and it’s value for money. Loving the footy on and the Olympics for Free!!!

  5. Nobody would pay an extra fee to watch the Commonwealth Games on Foxtel. The Commonwealth Games are a second rate version of the Olympic Games.

So Foxtel did the right thing and offered them for free to us. As a free gift, it wasn’t bad and had some good stuff in it (ie Rugby 7’s, not in the Olympics until Rio 2016).

  6. From the email I received this morning.

    * Foxtel Sports residential customers only. You must be a Sports HD subscriber to access the channels in HD. Foxtel and some services not available to all homes.
Does not apply to Foxtel on XBOX 360 or Foxtel on T-BOX customers.

So there’s never been a better time to Get Foxtel or upgrade to a Sports package.

I don’t think Telstra subscribers or Austar are eligible for this deal either.

  7. Austar better be offering the same deal. They just put the price up again citing the addition of the afl channel. Give me all the rugby league games live and I’ll be happy! To me foxtel/ austar seem very greedy most the time so it’s good to get something back for long term subscription

  8. Any idea if Foxtel from Telstra customers are part of this deal?
Vancouver comm games were offered free to foxtel customers but not foxtel from Telstra customers.
Hopefully they recognise us this time. 🙂

  9. First how does this apply to Austar customers?

I cut the sports package over a year ago so when would you have needed to be connected to take advantage of this, if it applied to Austar?
