Gretel evicted from Big Brother

Outspoken host Gretel Killeen has been ousted from TEN’s Big Brother as part of a complete re-vamp of the show for 2008.

The Daily Telegraph reports that the show will return in a new format next year, with the removal of the host spearheading its new look.

The rumour on other changes includes a new set, new rules and a possible new location. Staff at Southern Star Endemol were reportedly told to “be creative” in their wish list of fresh ideas.

Killeen has hosted the show since its inception in 2000. But she has divided viewers, with many who find her dominating and showing favouritism, while just as many admire her ability to think on her feet amid trying situations -not the least of which was the now-infamous “Free The Refugees” moment from Housemate Merlin in 2004.

Former housemate Tim Brunero told NineMSN Gretel’s departure would be a huge loss. “She was a professional operating with a live audience on a very high-rating show, with someone in her ear giving her instructions at all times. She managed to steer house mates through some very difficult and emotional situations. She was firm with the boys and a mother to the girls,” he said.

Kris Noble, the second “Big Brother” after Peter Abbott, is also understood to have moved on from SSE.

Early names being suggested for BB 2008 include Up Late host Mike Goldman and singer-actress Natalie Bassingthwaighte -a highly unlikely choice given she will already front TEN’s So You Think You Can Dance.

  1. Yes ‘axe’ this show. BB has been just exploitive junk, mostly. Gretel K was pretty brave actually.

Prediction: Kyle & Jackie cannot raise the dead.

  2. Gretel is the best female “live TV” host we have … she is exceptional! BB without Gretel will only be half as good as it is now … which doesn’t leave very much at all!
    Missing you already Gretel!
    Jack!

  3. There is no way that Kyle and Jackie O can ever step into Gretel’s shoes. The host of Big Brother needs to have intelligence and a quick wit in dealing with people, something that these two definitely do not have. I have watched every series of Big Brother up until now – Channel Ten has just made a very big mistake!

  4. Gretel is a valuable asset to the show and a top hostess to boot. The only problem I ever had was her occassionally SHOCKING fashion sense.

She always maintained a level head in the midst of all the screaming from the audience (and in her ear piece), and she never backed down when the housemates tried to take her on. Who gives a crap if she was at times a little biased. I mean, who isn’t? She’s human for God’s sake and she’s not afraid to show it.

Incidentally, Mike Goldman is NOT fit to host BB. He’s an uncharismatic drunkard. Don’t get me wrong, his antics on BB Up-Late are at times amusing, but I don’t think I’d be able to stand him as the host of the core BB programs.

Fare thee well, Gretel. You will be missed.

  5. Live shows have around for 50 years, mosts hosts understand the ability to not include there personal opinions, something Gretel couldnt handle, Her strong and well known stance on feminism and Gay rights was obvious and at times her distaste for the male contestants was so transparent it offended the majority of the audience.
A professional live hosts keep sthe audience guessing about their personal ideals and never have an agenda when it comes to interviewing the CONTESTANTS or GUESTS.
Whatever the shows flaws were Gretel was a major one, she will move on to … well other things.

Australia has very little star vehcile shows and even though BB’s past contestants have rarely ever achieved further succes (let alone maintained any credability) Aus needs any show it can get.

My opinion, they should axe the show altogether. A BB contetant has no talent. Being unbashfull isnt a talent its a personality trait. But then again its channel ten we are talking about.

  6. I agree. Gretel is the best part of BB. And the one continuing thread. I think their desperate atemps to change things will mark the death knel to a show that has already run its course.

  7. Disappointed that BB is letting Gretel go. She had quite an ability to keep the eviction show under control – despite the 1000s of teens screaming in the audience, producers shouting directions in her earpiece, and having to cope with hyperactive BB evictees clutching onto their 15 minutes of fame. She’s an asset to the show – and Jackie O and Matt Tilley?!? That HAS to be a joke!

  8. well all i can say is that me and a couple hundred thousand people WON’T WATCH BIG BROTHER WITHOUT GRETEL!!! COULD TEN MAKE A MORE STUPID DECISION!!!!
