Seven to TEN: "I don’t think so"

The Seven Network has responded to claims last week from TEN boss Grant Blackley that it would lose the 2008 ratings year. It’s certainly a change from the usual bout between Seven and Nine.

“Seven is comfortable with its position in 2008,” said a press release. “Granted, Seven didn’t start the year off as well as it did last year, but hey, that was Seven’s best performance, EVER. And Grant, we haven’t thrown the towel in after just 12 survey weeks – we have 28 survey weeks to go and Seven has so much to offer! Does TEN?”

The response follows a week in which Seven has won the ratings, while TEN is heading south since the end of So You Think You Can Dance Australia and a poor launch by Big Brother. Last night TEN even landed behind the ABC.

Seven asserts that TEN has been “propped up” by two programmes in 2008 (Dance and Biggest Loser).

“TEN have done their usual program stint in throwing everything up front and leaving nothing enticing for the backend.”

Press Release:

Grant Blackley from TEN (No: 3 Network), expressed concern for Seven (No: 1 Network) in the press last week. It’s a bit like Eric the Eel and Grant Hackett in the pool – miles apart (have we mentioned that we have the Olympic Games this year?)

Seven is comfortable with its position in 2008. Granted, Seven didn’t start the year off as well as it did last year, but hey, that was Seven’s best performance, EVER. And Grant, we haven’t thrown the towel in after just 12 survey weeks – we have 28 survey weeks to go and Seven has so much to offer! Does TEN?

TEN have done their usual program stint in throwing everything up front and leaving nothing enticing for the backend. Their success, a low benchmark being No: 3 Network, has mainly been due to two programs which were televised consistently throughout the week to enable some appearances in the top weekly ranking.

TEN expressed concern on Seven’s position in 2008 but something is for sure, Seven will easily beat TEN, as they will continue their usual position as the No: 3 Network.

Seven has a fantastic line-up installed for the remainder of 2008 and are confident that it will place us in a very competitive position. As for TEN, their two big properties are over, and they are hanging on with Big Brother which is proving not so BIG. In the last couple of weeks, TEN have dropped their audience by 2.8% for

AUDIENCE PERFORMANCE
TEN’S AUDIENCE HAS BEEN PROPPED UP BY TWO PROGRAMS…..
So You Think You Can Dance (2 versions in top 10 programs on TEN for most weeks between Weeks 7-18)
Biggest Loser (2-3 versions in top 10 programs on TEN for most weeks between Weeks 7-18, 2008)

Since these two programs ended in Week 18, 2008, TEN’s audience has declined. Meanwhile, Seven has secured growth across all of these demographics.

  1. From the press release:
“American Idol launched to its lowest ever premiere spelling more trouble for TEN”

I thought Ten gave up showing American Idol. Isn’t it on Fox 8, exclusive and fast-tracked and stuff?

  2. Ryan, TEN have allowed personalities from other Networks on their channel before, going back to the days of The Panel. Some NINE personalities appeared, as well as the ABC and SBS, but SEVEN refused because they are very strict about their personalities only being on their own network. Rove has tried to get SEVEN personalities as well, but has been refused.

  3. The only part of the article I agree with is where Seven mention that last year was their best performance, EVER….Whilst SEVENS audience has dropped, was anyone expecting them to better their results last year??? Its rare that a network retains the sucess year in year out, all networks experience year on year audience shedding.

The rest of the article is just petty bitching, so sick of the Australian Networks, they’re so tied up in themselves that they won’t even let another network personality do an interview on another station, complete craziness if you ask me, we should adopt a more liberal commercial network scheme similar to the US, maybe then network shows wouldn’t become so stale and stagnant recycling the same presenters around a few shows.

  4. if you are looking at who has the best HD channel offerings then 10 is by far the winner, 7 used to be beating nine but not anymore in my opinion, 9HD has 2 shows i watch whereas 7HD doesn’t have anything anymore, they are repeating daybreak, i saw it the first time round. 10HD actually shows an effort, although it has slid back from the strong launch, but the others aren’t really trying.

  5. Unlike America where the media report the 18-49 demographic as being just as important as the total people figures…Australian media usually ignore any demographics.

Here are the facts – TEN run their own race competing with themselves year-on-year and only care about the 18-49 and 16-39 demographic. Any improvement in 25-54 or total people is gravy to them.

This is why SEVEN are being so defensive.

TEN is winning year-to-date in the 18-49 demographic 6pm – 10.30pm and is up 2.1% compared to last year. NINE are second and are up 13.0% compared to last year. SEVEN are third and are down 12.6% compared to last year.

TEN is winning year-to-date in the 16-39 demographic 6pm – 10.30pm and is up 2.3% compared to last year. NINE is coming second and are up 18.0% compared to last year. SEVEN are third and are down 16.7%.

NINE are winning year-to-date in the 25-54 demographic 6pm – 10.30pm and is up 9.4% compared to last year. SEVEN is second, but are down 11.2% compared to last year. TEN are third, but are still up by 3.9% compared to last year.

In Total People SEVEN are winning year-to-date by only 0.4%, but are down 6.1% compared to last year. NINE are second and are up 3.3% compared to last year. TEN are third and are up 4.2% compared to last year.

The only demographic that SEVEN has improved in this year compared to last year is the 50+ demographic, which TEN also improved in, but NINE are down.

When the reporting the ratings on this site, why not have a look at how Marc Berman does it on his forums at http://www.pifeedback.com and start giving out the demographics as well. It’s ironic that the ratings only exist for the advertisers, and I would guarantee that no advertiser would only look at total people when deciding where to advertise their products…that’s why demographics exist in the first place. So KFC and 3 Mobile know to advertise in Big Brother, and Pensioners Insurance know to advertise in Dancing With The Stars.

  6. I never knew that the Olympics didn’t count towards the end of year total… but seriously, going after Ten is not going to win any ratings wars. The only thing this will do is turn peoples attentions away from 7 and do what Blackley at Ten said, it will cost 7 the best chance it has to be “still the one”.

  7. But Seven don’t have that much to offer really and The Olympics don’t count officially. I mean what do they have? City Homicide? The tired DWTS? Seven are on the slide and attacking TEN won’t change that.
