lindsayduncan460Actress Lindsay Duncan will guest star in the second Doctor Who Special of 2009.

Duncan is known for her roles in stage and screen, including Rome, Shooting The Past and GBH and is soon to star as Margaret Thatcher in the highly anticipated BBC Two drama, Margaret. She will also be seen next month in ABC’s Lost in Austen as Lady Catherine de Bourgh.

In Doctor Who she will play Adelaide , descibed as “the Doctor’s cleverest and most strong-minded companion yet.”

She said, “I’m thrilled to be involved in Doctor Who. I’ve never done anything like this before and I’m really looking forward to working with David Tennant and the Doctor Who team.”

Russell T. Davies said, “Lindsay is an incredibly talented actress and I’ve been an admirer of her work for some time. We are delighted to announce that she will be joining the team and playing the Doctor’s most strong-minded companion yet.”

Duncan joins David Tennant as he continues his role as The Doctor in the second instalment of the four Doctor Who Specials to be screened throughout 2009, which will follow Planet Of The Dead, due to air this Easter in the UK.

Planet Of The Dead has just concluded its filming in Dubai.

The second episode is written by Russell T Davies and Phil Ford. It is due to go into production in Spring 2009 and will be screened on BBC One later this year.

I am not overly fussed on the new Dr Who for the simple fact that 45 minutes is not enough time to build a story without having to have a big rush at the end to get it all tied up on time.

This often leads to rather contrived endings I felt.

From the TV adverts is would seem that every other episode is on earth and in a none too subtle way, a shame really.

More strong minded than Donna? Pssh – I think not.

Oh just bring back Sally Sparrow already! :)

Though since this will sadly be a Moffat-free year on Doctor Who, I guess we’ll have to wait until 2010 for some real good news (and, er, good scripts ;) )

Of course we now get into the semantics as to whether she is actually a ‘companion’ or a guest actor? Are you a companion if you only appear in one episode? I think not!

Sounds like she will be a great companion.

Also, Michael, have you ever entertained the thought that perhaps women have a purpose that is separate from their appearance?

    Guess not :)

You know it’s a press release when the words “delighted” and “thrilled” are in the quotes. It’s some kind of rule they’re not allowed to break.

@Tony. No, this article is about the 2nd 2009 special. (2 of the 4)

The first one is ‘Planet of the Dead’ which screens at Easter in the UK so maybe May here or thereabouts on ABC.

This second special will air sometime later in 2009 in the UK, the specific date and title has not yet been announced by BBC.

So we might get to see this in May?
