The 7pm Project: it’s official

UPDATED: Ruby Rose and James Mathison join Dave Hughes, Charlie Pickering and Carrie Bickmore for TEN's new show to launch July 20th.

7pmIt will be known as The 7pm Project.

It will start on July 20th and it will look at the day’s news live everynight.

Led by comedian co-hosts Dave Hughes and Charlie Pickering, The 7PM Project will be “the simplest new idea in television for a long time.” The news of the day will be brought to audiences by Carrie Bickmore. The show will have a team of correspondents delivering stories from around Australia and around the world into the studio every night. Ruby Rose will be bringing viewers all the latest music news. The media and sport beat will be covered by James Mathison.

TEN says “The 7PM Project is a place where people who are genuinely interested in the world around them come together to talk, offering genuine conversation in a space previously crowded by scandal and spin. While it’s not afraid to be serious, The 7PM Project can guarantee that there will be no miracle diets, no stories that ‘no parent can afford to miss’, and virtually no dodgy plumbers. The 7PM Project is the news un-spun. It is not a satirical newscast in the style of Jon Stewart’s Daily Show, but a TV show joining in the conversations going on in living rooms around the country.”

Rose and Mathison join the three names tipped by TV Tonight earlier this week for the show produced by Roving Enterprises. More names will be announced over the coming weeks.

Mathison recently stepped asided from Australian Idol although he was quoted at the time as saying, “I am not going to be on TV for a while now, not Dancing With The Stars or anything like that. I just want to explore other music opportunities while I am here in New York and at home.”

TEN Programmer David Mott said, “We’ve had great success in introducing brave projects to the Aussie TV landscape such as MasterChef Australia and Talkin‘ ‘Bout Your Generation and if we get this right, The 7PM Project could be a game changer for TEN in that very crucial 7pm timeslot. Not to mention our digital platform which plays a key role in the experience, driving content and discussions to the show, making it a truly integrated TV /on-line offering and a place for audiences to share their stories, opinions and interact.”

TEN has surely found 7pm success with MasterChef Australia and The Biggest Loser but it struggled with Taken Out and too often has had to rely on The Simpsons as filler.

  1. It seems a terrible title works wonders for a show… I remember everyone bagging out the title of Talkin bout your Generation, worked out pretty well for them!

  2. ooo…this or H&A. I do love the line up for this show. All great personalities. I might have to record it and watch later, and see how it goes 🙂

  3. Intriguing, however apart from Mathisen (sic) the hosts sound bloody annoying…

And a title change would be good, how about The 7PM Slot as a better one (with 2 seconds thought).

Oh, and David, having The Simpsons as filler is a good thing! 🙂

  4. Could be good, but no need for Dave Hughes, he’s not funny at all. Carrie (on Rove) is just told what to read and when to pause for laughter, so not sure how she will go without a script. I will put the first ep on PVR and watch later than night.

  5. By the way, agree with Brodie entirely. More examples: 7:30 report, midday report, abc news, nine news, ten news, seven news, lateline, stateline, abc news breakfast. It’s really disappointing to find out that they’re calling it the 7pm project.

  6. Sounds great. Ruby, Mathison and Hughsey are the best.. the other 2 dont interest me at all.. Will def check out, looks decent and remember guys – dont decide its fate from now, remember the fools who said Masterchef was going to be a ‘Masterflop’ – it was anything but a flop!

  7. Sounds interesting. I hope this is a success, if only just to take away viewers from the crappy and repetitive Home and Away and Two and a Half Men. Could it lure viewers away from those two and more interestingly from ABC News? Only time will tell, but IMO they’re off to a good start with a mostly likeable cast.

  8. It doesn’t sound like a “new idea” to me. It sounds like Good News Week, The Panel, The Fat, Before the Game and Q&A all rolled into one. And why’d they pick all these comedians if it’s supposed to be a serious news show?? I’ll give it a go, but i don’t know.
And out of those hosts Charlie and Carrie are the only ones i’m keen on. Used to love Dave Hughes but now theres only so much i can take, over James Mathison i thought he was doign every1 a favour by leaving idol, and haven’t seen too much of Ruby Rose but imo a little overrated.
I’ll judge it when i see it.

  9. So many people are being negative here for the sake of being negative, I bet these are the same people who thought Masterchef would flop. I’ll give this a shot, honestly it sounds like the best program to air in a 7pm stripped slot in years. Not everyone is into soap operas, crappy 2.5 men reruns and reality tv.

  10. As long as they report genuine news stories (rather than weight loss, and stories that belong in the trash mags), they’ll definitely find an audience. The only thing is it will clash with ABC. I’m surprised at how many young people (under 30), myself included that watch ABC news just to get a break from the tabloid trash on the other stations.

If ten manages to produce a topical news show, in a relaxed environment, they will definitely draw an audience.

  11. I’m sorry 2 comedians and 2 people renowned for making jokes and this will be a serious news program? to steal the catchphrase from Big Brother “I Don’t Think So!”

As if it won’t turn into a war of who can make the funniest comment about a news story.. kind of like Chelsea Lately.

  12. looking forward to it, great to see Ruby Rose on tv, MTV or SKY NEWS should of done this along time ago, good on you TEN, hope it doesn’t get axed. Sport covered by James Mathison, i guess thats why sports tonight was moved to 9:30pm ET on ONE.

  13. George & philm, the plan is to have MasterChef and Biggest Loses at 7.30 next year. Hopefully for Tens sake, The 7pm Project is a success.

  14. It sounds good, if it takes off, does anyone think Ten should try it at 6pm following the news when TBL and MC return next year. It could build or hold alot of the lead in the news providesand give ten a much needed boost in the 6pm timeslot. Ten should try a 3rd reality series next year, goin for something broad like Loser and MC. Hope this does well cos it sounds like a great show. The other option if it works, move neighbours to 6pm, and have there reality shows at 6.30. the only thing with that is that they cant do more than 30min eps of TBL or MC and we all know the 1hour eps do better. Either way, now that MC has become a hit, i think ten need to launch a 3rd 7pm strip reality to team with idol the way loser and dance do, to help there last 1/2 of the year. expect masterchef to run for 14 – 16 week next year. ten are probably crying for only giving it a ten week order atm.

  15. Sounds good. This is the current affairs show that young people want – intelligent and informative, without taking itself or life too seriously. And don’t under-estimate james mathison, he’s a pretty switched on bloke. If u r going to judge someone based on their bug-eyes ur probably more likely to watch today tonight anyway. If this show works, having Loser and Masterchef starting at 7:30pm next year is going to totally change primetime dynamic.

  16. > what a great cross section of multicultural australia those hosts represent…
Yes, because choosing people on the basis of their race is always a good idea.
