Optus satellite set for August launch

By David Knox on July 2, 2009 / Filed Under Pay TV 17

Satellite_SpaceAnd a little cheer just went up around the nation….

Optus has at last confirmed it will launch its D3 satellite, which will be used to provide more Pay TV channels, in mid-August.

“We are especially excited about Optus D3 because, for the first time in a decade, the new satellite will increase Optus’ fleet capacity by more than 30%, providing new business opportunities in broadcast television, direct-to-home market, new data services and services bundling,” said Paul Sheridan director of Optus Satellite.

Foxtel, which intends launching more than 20 new channels this year, will be the largest customer of the new satellite.

Satellite capacity issues have also been an ongoing problem to customers in some cities who view via satellite connection rather than cable.

The Optus D3 will be launched by an Ariane-5 rocket from the Guiana Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana.

Darryn, take a look at the title of this blog. Has what to do with mobile phones?

Depends where you live and whether you are satellite or cable, hence many looking forward to the new satellite.

Itsross, first off do not presume you have a right to say where i may post. 2ndly that “minor spread” affected 300,000 users. 3rd it was a hardware issue, so it was highly appropiate to this thread

Darryn I don’t see what a small spread 3G outage has to do with a Satellite going up. Wrong place.

“Does an Austar customer say yay to this news?”

Austar customers are ROFL at this….how many years behind Foxtel are they in delivering not only HD but standard channels as well – 111 hits being the latest example.

Goes up on August 18th, if no more delays are met.

After testing, you would likely see October and November being the timeframe for the new channels.

Austar are hoping to have their HD MyStar out by mid-November now apparently.
