Today pips Sunrise

By David Knox on July 31, 2009 / Filed Under News 32

today lisa karlThursday was a good day for the Today show which had a rare win over Sunrise.

Nine’s show took 347,000, just edging ahead of Seven’s on 340,000.

While Sydney preferred Sunrise, Melbourne went to Today (by a significant margin) as did Brissy. Adelaide and Perth stuck with Seven.

Just 24 hours earlier it was a different story: Sunrise had 391,000 while Today had 288,000. On most days, Seven’s show averages around 70,000 ahead of its rival, but Nine continues to gain ground, including on Sundays.

The brekkie war continues to be good news for viewers. We all benefit when programmes are kept on their toes -except when they try stupid stunts.

And for the record, ABC News Breakfast is also offering an alternative wake-up to the day on ABC2 too, hosted by Virginia Trioli and Joe O’Brien.

I have found Mel and Kochie seem be a little bit over each other and Mel seems bored. She is a great reporter live from various locations like the mining tradgedy but look like she is over the whole studio thing. Lisa, however looks like she thrives on it and brings out the best in her co-host. I think they will pip them regularly soon.

Ok, I live in the United States and just let me tell you that your version of the Today show is fantastic compared to ours. The hosts – Lisa, Karl, Cameron and Georgie are just a pleasure to watch and the funny moments are just hilarious. Keep up the good work – it’s really an awesome show. As for Sunrise – yuk!!!!

Good luck Today – what an awesome team.

So then Sunrise won again the very next day. Yawn.

No one is really certain, because ABC@ does not give details. But last we saw ABC News Breakfast was getting under 20,000 a day.

  5. Andrew July 31, 2009 at 8:29 pm -

They probably won because Matthew White was filling in as host for Kochie.

    the pic is very funny

i reckon this is signe of things to come. kocjie, mel, berretts and nat have been there a long time and the show is really getting old and stale. kochie thinks he is the funniest bloke in the world and he clearly isnt. mel i would keep on and nat. they are good for that show. the rest are hopeless

For me the best thing about Today is Richard Reid’s Hollywood gossip before the 7am news. His voice certainly wakes you up!

@Jeremy Lam – This was a story by David not by Nine…. dunno where u are getting your comment from.

I for one watch Today at work online…. if sunrise got rid of david koch and put there show online i would probably consider them too… but i do enjoy Today… the team seem to get on really well now and its nice to watch…. I like to start the day with a happy and vibrant show that also gives me the news and no be stuck with ABC Breakfast that is so serious…. But then again i am young and the only time i switch to ABC is for Spicks & Speaks & The Chaser (or similar programs) so maybe when i age a bit i will find the ABC more watchable.

Today is much more stylish & doesn’t insult your intelligence while Sunrise is dumbed down silliness aimed at bogans like much of the stuff on Seven. I’m amazed that anyone can watch Mel & Koch without flying into a fit of rage and destroying the tv :)

@ kenny..I’m sure there are more swallows coming!

  11. tasmanian devil July 31, 2009 at 5:04 pm -

@Glenn Petrie, Today is certainly not a serious news program, it’s just as casual as Sunrise. Though I prefer Today on the weekdays as Kochie, Nat and even Mel are all too annoying for my liking.
@Craig, I’m thinking that when ABC 3 launches, the kids programming in the mornings will go to that channel sometime, because it airs in that timeslot, and possibly ABC News Breakfast may move to ABC 1?

that pic of lisa looks like her head is on another body, check out her neck!

Much prefer Today over that Sunrise dribble…although give me Weekend Sunrise (with AOK and Sam) anytime, enjoy them alot more than Today on the weekends

Lol – Nine gets excited by beating Sunrise by 7,000 viewers on a day when David Koch wasn’t even on-air!! Um, I wonder why Nine didn’t say anything the day before when they lost by more than 100,000 viewers! Sunrise didn’t claim victory until they won two months worth of consecutive days back in 2004. Nothing like that is happening now. But I agree with another poster here about Seven’s younger demographics at breakfast – and Nine’s desperation to claim anything right now, even a very shallow and marginal win.

Used to watch Sunrise, it was a pleasant show to wake up to years ago… News, but presented in a friendly manner, so you didn’t start the day with the weight of the world bearing down. (plus Nat is easy on the eye)

Lately though I’ve switched to ABC2. Even though their morning news lacks a certain warmth, at least we’re spared the self-righteous opinionated diatribe that David Koch has taken to sprouting. Melissa Doyle is getting a tad irksome with her silly blonde schoolgirl act as well.

its a long way to go….i havent watched Sunrise for more than 10minutes for a while, if there has to be breakky TV it is Today for me, even with Karl

  17. jake Whitehorse July 31, 2009 at 1:07 pm -

seems like it was a bit of a freak day – was there a blackout in Brisbane?

  18. Peter July 31, 2009 at 1:03 pm -

I guess a win like this will give nine execs something to cheer about this week. Other than this, their weeks been dismal!

  19. Craig July 31, 2009 at 12:46 pm -

ABC News Breakfast is pretty good. At least they show real news, not the trashy celeb stuff on 7 and 9. Just wish they could move it to ABC1 so it could get the bigger audience it deserves.

  20. salf July 31, 2009 at 12:04 pm -

it’s a case of sunrise which fluctuates a lot but still wins as today has a stable audience. one day it will be a 20k lead and the today fans make sure everyone knows and then the next day it’s back to a 100k+ lead. the main explanation for this is that sunrise has a very significantly younger audience which are less reliable to come back day-to-day. whereas the oldies have more of a routine and come back every day.

bt the reason yesterday was unusual was today pulled about 50k viewers out of nowhere while sunrise has one of their downward fluctuation.

  21. Axel July 31, 2009 at 11:56 am -

Both of these shows are terrible.

  22. Craig July 31, 2009 at 11:55 am -

Do we have numbers for ABC’s morning show David?

I’m still a Sunrise fan but here it’s just on in the background, I wonder how many actually pay attention to either show?

Is there a drop off or do some switch at different times?

  23. Ben Tree July 31, 2009 at 11:20 am -

What does the ABC2 breakfast program rate these days?

  24. Greg July 31, 2009 at 11:10 am -

Today beat them because they’ve very heavily dumbed down their style of ‘news’
(if one can even call it that) just like Sunrise also have, focusing on Hollywood gossip and other ‘entertaining’ news. Despite ABC2′s morning breakfast show getting thoroughly abysmal ratings,it’s superior to both.

  25. Kenny July 31, 2009 at 11:07 am -

“One swallow does not a summer make”. Anyway, I watch ABC News Breakfast.

  26. James Russell July 31, 2009 at 10:46 am -

Can Channel Ten get breakfast television?

  27. koverstreet July 31, 2009 at 10:46 am -

May have had something to do with the 1 hit wonder special they did but still a good sign for Today.

It’s only a matter of time before it takes over Sunrise for good.

  28. Glenn Petrie July 31, 2009 at 10:41 am -

It seems that viewers are not interested in serious breakfast news programs (“Today”) and are more interested in fancy, feel-good programs (“Sunrise”). Good to see the former rating for once.

  29. Edu July 31, 2009 at 10:41 am -

It’s a long time coming, hopefully Today will continue this stride as it really is the more watchable show between the two.

  30. BoyWonder July 31, 2009 at 10:40 am -

Been a 7 person all my life (grew up with BTQ7) and a dislike for all things 9, I have always liked Lisa and find the Today show has a better feel. Better graphics. However the Gossip guy is way too camp for my liking.

  31. jh July 31, 2009 at 10:19 am -

Had no idea viewing numbers for mornings were so turbulent ?!

  32. jason July 31, 2009 at 10:09 am -

I’m liking the increased news content on Sunrise. I lost interest in Today when they did a slurpie contest between the hosts.
