If you like your American cable dramas to be a little bit introspective, thoughtful, dark and unexpected, Nurse Jackie is awaiting your call.
Edie Falco stars as an emergency nurse in this Showtime drama coming to TEN in September.
For Jackie, “Every day is a high wire act of juggling patients, doctors, fellow nurses and her own indiscretions.”
Variety said:
“Nurse Jackie” administers an odd cocktail — one that starts out potent but loses some fizz with each successive round. “The Sopranos'” Edie Falco is clearly the straw that stirs the drink as a cranky, pill-popping nurse surrounded by an assortment of eccentric characters. Yet after the promising, twisty premiere (which makes especially good use of the theme from “Valley of the Dolls”), the series becomes hard-to-define in mostly the wrong ways — a half-hour that’s not particularly funny, simply dark and bleak, yet without much high-stakes drama. Alas, even Showtime can’t quite live by “quirky” alone.
The Hollywood Reporter said:
She’d be a fascinating character study even if that was all “Jackie” had to offer. But though the show might run at an “ER” pace, the episodes thus far have a stirring, literary quality to them: smart, keenly observed glances into both sides of a woman’s mirror married with what might be the most striking cinematography ever lavished on a half-hour comedy. Is “Jackie” believable? Not in the least. But the fantastical creation of Jackie Peyton, perhaps surprisingly, has shades of gray that make her very real indeed. Both show and character are something wonderful to behold — and worth taking multiple doses of.
The Washington Post added:
The drama, which Showtime calls a black comedy, is full of sly twists and startling variations on familiar med-show traditions; this is not just another lament about the long hours and difficult conditions common to those who toil in hospitals. Nor are they all do-gooders and humanitarians. Even the frankness and realism of the late, great “ER” are outdone by “Nurse Jackie’s” penetrating and irreverent candor.
It premieres 10:25pm Sunday September 13th on TEN.

I am just home from a month in the states.
Nurse Jackie was fresh, fun and different to all the same generic cookie cutter television that we are served up on our 3 commercial networks.
Yet again they put a great show on at a time that will last for 2 weeks. No wonder more and more of us are bypassing free to air and downloading shows that we actually want to watch.
What a shame yet again Network Ten :-(((
it would be late due to content which is why this show is wasted on TEN and on a Sunday night!
seriously CH10 10:30 on a sunday for a new show. why not air it at a time when people who actually work can watch it. 9:30 or even 10pm sounds alot better
I see this going the same way as Dexter unfortunately.
thats a ridiclous time for a new show!! who not put it in your failing fri, wed, mon 9.30 slots??
Here’s hoping that Channel 10 gives this a decent run !
It’s probably 10:25 because of the content, speaking of I bet there will be protests or do-gooders saying something about the show.
Showtime’s Nurse Jackie was great. Unlike TNT’S Hawthorne. I’m glad it got renewed for a second series.
Why at 10:25pm when it’s first run? Swap around Little Britian USA & this show, Ten!!
I like this show, unfortunately I’ve only seen the pilot but might make an effort to catch up this weekend. Edie Falco was on The View back in June promoting it.
