Aussie networks turn to MIPCOM

So what are some of our Aussie networks looking for at the international sales fest MIPCOM in France?

mipcom2009As the annual international salesfest that is MIPCOM approaches, Variety gives us an idea of what our networks are looking for in 2010 content.

According to the US showbiz bible, TEN programming head Beverley McGarvey says the network’s strong position, particularly in the 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. slots, means they can be selective at the market.

“For the first time ever, we are not looking for a 7 p.m. strip,” says McGarvey after the launch of The 7PM Project. “But we remain interested in early evening content. We are interested in entertainment formats, and that is probably our primary focus at this market.”\

TEN is understood to be continuing with The 7PM Project through summer, in the hope it will forge an audience with less competition. The way its ratings are right now, you wouldn’t want to be starting with it in February. In fairness to the show, it has ironed out more of its wrinkles since its awkward start.

But Beverley, wouldn’t it be wise to have a Plan B as well?

Seven’s Tim Worner is eyeing primetime options for slots after 8.30 p.m.

“We’re looking at formats that can play a bit later at night,” Worner says. “Were looking for nondrama options that we can run against drama.”

Attending the event are names such as Jerry Seinfeld, Matt Groening, plus broadcasters, production companies, distributors and television execs from across the globe.

No mention of Nine or the public broadcasters plans.

Maybe they’re all soaking up some rays in Cannes…
