Axed: Dollhouse

“I don’t have a lot to say," says creator Joss Whedon after FOX cancels Dollhouse beyond its current 13 episode order.

joss-whedons-dollhouseBad news Dollhouse fans…

FOX has informed Joss Whedon it will not be ordering any more episodes beyond the current 13-episode order. Many would know it was do or die time for the series, and a Friday night slot in the US is never a good sign. Many would argue the show had always had the axe hanging over its head.

The series had been averaging a 3 million viewers this season, down from the 4.7 million it averaged last season.

Dollhouse starred Eliza Dushku as Echo, a “doll” or “Active” for the Dollhouse, an organization which hires out reprogrammable human beings to wealthy clients who use them for high-risk illegal activities. It also featured Australian actress Dichen Lachman.

FOX is expected to air the remaining episodes.

Joss Whedon told fans on Whedonesque.com: “I don’t have a lot to say. I’m extremely proud of the people I’ve worked with: my star, my staff, my cast, my crew. I feel the show is getting better pretty much every week, and I think you’ll agree in the coming months. I’m grateful that we got to put it on, and then come back and put it on again. I’m off to pursue Internet ventures/binge drinking. Possibly that relaxation thing I’ve read so much about. By the time the last episode airs, you’ll know what my next project is. But for now, there’s a lot of work still to be done, and disappointment to bear. Thank you all for your support, your patience, your excellent adverts. See you again.”

Nice to see he already nods to his next project…

Dollhouse airs on FOX8 in Australia.

  1. @Hmm that comment was a bit mean and racist. I thought Dichen was a great actor and if you don’t believe me definitely check out the Season 2 4th episode ‘Belonging’ and you will see what I mean. It was a remarkable performance from her and one of the better episodes of the season so far.

  2. I read from Joss a few weeks back that they were making the season final more like a series final, with some doors open on the extreme chance they got to do a third. If they haven’t finished making the season yet, one would have to assume they will make it a proper complete series final.

  3. I’m sorry but Whedon may have been a genius, certainly Buffy was one of the first great serialized dramas of the modern era but his last two efforts have been flops with niche appeal riding on big network money – under 5 million on a national network in America is appalling, arguable Firefly was stuffed around by Fox but Dollhouse wasn’t, if anything they’ve been incredibly graceful about it.

Others here are right, Whedon should move to cable where they enjoy throwing money away on buzz generators (Mad Men anyone? Surely that’s not profitable!)

  4. They should get Boreanaz off Bones and make a sixth season of Angel. Or at least a new movie. Seriously, with all the craze on Twilight, True Blood, The Vampire Diaries, Whedon should blast back and show them all how its really done.

  5. Looking 40 years into the future I can see Joss Whedon and Bryan Fuller sitting on the porch of a nursing homing sharing grumpy old man stories about all the great shows they had cancelled on them.

  6. argh. I’ve just been getting back into Firefly/Serenity and gnashing teeth over its early demise. Now this. Joss Whedon is a genius… how I wish some rich benefactor would sail in and fund him to make more Firefly (or Serenity) and what ever else he has bubbling away in his brain. Why don’t HBO or AMC snaffle him off Fox?

  7. This is the absolute worst TV news all year. I love Dollhouse and everything it has been, is and will be. Joss Whedon is an amazing talent and Eliza is one of the best television actors out there.

The show will truly be missed.

  8. Nooooooooooo!

“Many would argue the show had always had the axe hanging over its head” – so true. Joss, please no more with FOX, their axe is always out for him.

What is it with quality shows, not getting their fair dues. Bad slots, not support

  9. It’s the Eliza Dushku curse! 🙁 Tru Calling was awesome, and Dollhouse was only just now really kicking into gear. And that’s the problem – too little, too late.

  10. Booooooooooooooo.

Unfortunately, Eliza Dushku is contracted to Fox for another series so there’s no chance of the show being pick up by another network. 🙁

  11. This is not suprising news at all; Joss should stay well away from broadcast television from now on; he hasn’t had a hit since the Buffy days; I believe he should either focus on pitching the syfy where he would be perfectly suited or on features; Serenity was tremendous.

  12. It needed a heavy retooling in the second season, my first thought would have been to loose Helo and the girl from neighbors who are really poor actors. Remember the X-Files had a Friday night slot….
