Foxtel adds iPhone application

By David Knox on December 6, 2009 / Filed Under Pay TV 12

iphone2At long last, Foxtel has released an iPhone application, allowing subscribers to view a TV Guide, and more importantly, to use the Remote Record functionality to set recordings to the iQ.

The feature has been available on other phones but not the iPhone.

iPhone users expressed some frustration on the problem during this year’s TV Tonight Audience Inventory survey.

The feature follows the addition of Telstra customers being able to watch Foxtel on their iPhone for a daily or monthly fee -so far still unavailable to other phone carriers.

The iPhone Remote Record is certainly a nifty feature that allows you to get your phone to send a message to your iQ to record a show in case you are running late -including FTA shows.

The only drawback i see on this Foxtel Iphone App..

-> Doesn’t help you if you have more than 1x IQ in the house, It automatically goes to the 1st IQ. not any after.

..other than that, its all good!

One would probably be remiss in their duties to not mention FOXTEL iPhone application privacy leak at The Department of Internets.

“FOXTEL released an application this week that allows iPhone users to browse the EPG. It took two years, but it’s out, and IQ owners will be pleased.

Unfortunately, the application also sends personally identifiable information to a third-party website; Pinch Media. Pinch Media specialises in mobile analytics and targeted advertising.

In addition to tracking your movements through the application, sending Pinch Media information about the categories, channels, and programs you’ve looked at, FOXTEL transmits your iPhone’s Device ID as well.

The Device ID is unique to each and every iPhone manufactured. Combined with tracking information, the Device ID creates of a kind of super-cookie that cannot be disabled or deleted.

FOXTEL fails to disclose their arrangement with Pinch Media on the App Store product page, or in the Help & Legals section of the application itself.”

Just to make everyone aware, there does appear to be some privacy concerns about this application.

Great – it’ll work with the Ipod Touch (with internet connectivity) as well…

Oh wow! Finally! Though I wonder how anyone is supposed to know it exists without TV Tonight … or the ever helpful Mark Hammond channel?

This iPhone app is so much faster than using the website… and you only have to log in once.

Hope it won’t be too long before they allow you to select which box you would like to record to. Well done Foxtel, it’s a great start.

Those of us using certain FTA PVRs have been able to do this for ages using IceTV’s iPhone app.

Nice of Foxtel, with their massive budget, to finally catch up ;)
