Gone: Stargate Universe, Supernatural

Sci fi in Australia takes another hit. Standby for Monday night movies.

SupernaturalBoy, that didn’t take long….

TEN has dropped Stargate Universe and Supernatural from Monday nights.

Both shows are now out of schedule, giving the new sci fi just three weeks on air before being pulled.

On Monday night Stargate Universe took 487,000 viewers, leaving Supernatural just 394,000 and more importantly a lowly evening share of just 16% for the night.

They will be replaced by Monday night movies:
Jan 4: The Siege (1998)
Jan 11: Double Jeopardy (1999)
Jan 18: Speed (1994)

TEN is probably working out where to reschedule unaired episodes of both shows…. keep you posted on this one.

  1. @ Andrew— Malcom in the Middle airs @ 6:30pm, Accidently on Purpose @ 7:30pm & The Office @ 8:00pm. During summer these are night seen as “priority” timeslots because the networks realise that most people enjoy the sun during the summer– however under half a million viewers for an 8:30pm timeslot (which is the Biggest viewing timeslot across all shows minus the news during summer is not acceptable.

But then again it only had around 3-million viewers in the US, how did they ever expect such a ‘niche’ program to gain big viewers during the Australian summer. Sounds similar to when Channel 9 thought “Dance Your Ass Off” would be a primetime hit.

  2. Humans always have hope no matter how often we are disappointed there is some kind of primal ‘hope spark’ that emerges eg: conversation with my friends: “It won’t be necessary to find other means of watching Supernatural will there? No of course not 10 are usually pretty good about showing the whole season. Ok good.” Us and our stupid surge of primal ‘hope spark’. The ‘spark” has been put out.

  3. Top 5 shows on Ten this week so far (other than Ten News at 5):

    1 NCIS Rpt Tue 647,099
    2 White Collar Tue 597,000
3 Malcolm in the Middle Wed 523,000
4 Malcolm in the Middle Mon 503,000
    5 Stargate Universe Mon 487,000

And averaging out Malcolm for the week could see SGU 3rd most watched non-news show on Ten for the week – yet it will no longer be on. Where is the logic???

  4. @Burt says:
December 30, 2009 at 7:30 pm “With respect to Nine stupidly onselling Smallville to Ten.”
Actually, Nine did a good thing selling it to TEN. Nine showed all of season one and half of season two over three years. It had multiple “Season Finales” after their 4 -6 week runs during summer. It was also often dumped for the Cricket (dont get me started on cricket…) So that is 35 episodes shown over 156 weeks. Hmm great way to sell a show! And Nine still have not learned anything from this.

TEN picked it up and showed the remainder of season 2, then all of season 3 and 4 all in a row. They even showed double eps during and after summer. By the time it aired season 5, they started to mess with the schedule, then came season 6 which was scattered all over the place. Season 7 was then on HD only, so limited number of viewers there. I had to obtain it from other sources from season 5 onwards, and still do for season 9. For a short time TEN were not too far behind the US screening of the show, but then they decided that they want the viewers to get stuffed and find another way of obtaining the show.

I do not rewatch the shows on FTA that I have already seen by other means, but I do however tell other people to watch it, such as season one of Heroes. I lost count of the number of people I told to watch it when it starts on Seven.

When TEN does start it’s new general entertainment channel, I do not see myself watching it, mainly because they will be showing stuff I wanted to see 18 months ago, and got to see by other means.

  5. How many of us would watch/record Supernatural if it was on at midnight? I’m sure that the number would be much higher than the number that watch that home shopping crap.

  6. @David Knox – You say that people don’t complain when a show rates 2m and that the ratings system is likely to be unfair to those shows as well. Frankly, *I* complain about a lot of those 2m rated shows because I fail to see how a lot of them could possibly rate that high – most of them are complete rubbish! That’s what I mean about the ratings being skewed.

I know that the ratings are deemed to be of the same standard as other countries, but their systems aren’t any good either. The whole method of rating is so out-dated and needs a major overhaul. The sample used is useless.

  7. Ahhh!!! That’s stupid. Supernatural has always been greatly followed by obsessive Australians!

Well, luckily, some of us watch Supernatural on the internet before it comes out in Australia.

  8. And while Ten are at it, replace all of these with movies too:

    21 Accidentally On Purpose Ten 481,000 79,000 158,000 100,000 78,000 65,000
    24 Malcolm In The Middle Ten 448,000 101,000 121,000 84,000 82,000 60,000
    26 The Office Tues Ten 425,000 85,000 141,000 72,000 69,000 58,000

This is why they are getting 16% shares. Stargate at 487,000 is better than all of the above.

  9. This decade I think the biggest change has been the capacity to create your own channel. We can record the best of terrestrial tv on our PVR’s. We have many, many different ways to source additional material. So we decide what we will watch and when. If a show isn’t measuring up we can drop it from our schedules. We have the power. Sorry channel Ten. You are irrelevant.

  10. Chopping Supernatural will be the biggest mistake Channel 10 ever made we are a dedicated a loyal viewing audience. Shame on them worst channel ever, disgrace to Australian Television, thank god for Foxtel and other means. You suck!!!

  11. You all can’t expect TEN to keep it on in prime time if it doesn’t rate, it is a business people.

If it doesn’t rate, it doesn’t get to stay on the air. Simple. If you all want this so badly on FTA, start watching it there instead of getting it “from another source” next time it gets given a run.

  12. For the fans of the show it’s just another kick in the groin from Channel 10 they have done it before and will do it again.
I wonder how these high paid boffins would cope if some unknown halfwit kept moving their parking spots around all over the car park and removing them all together on a moments whim, it’s simply annoying and only adds to the inevitable disappointment. Congratulations whoever made this decission, idiot.

  13. I am so incensed. We’re a family of 4 that have watched Supernatural from the pilot episode. Huge fans. It’s one of the few shows that brings us all together in front of the TV. We’ve watched it develop from a series of short ghost stories to a suspenseful, in-depth, ongoing storyline, with the emphasis on the ongoing (like it’s helpful if we can have some semblence of continuity). We waited patiently for TEN to finish airing Season 4 after disrupting its run, and to finally air Season 5 after delaying it. We’re just happily settling into the new season, and then TEN programmers play God and decide that’s enough, that we don’t get to watch any more? If they’re concerned with ratings in that timeslot, do they really think we’re going to stick around to watch the replacement movie instead? Take away my show and I don’t watch just anything instead. The kids will go back to their computers, my husband will flick to Foxtel Sport, and I’ll watch a recorded episode of something I couldn’t watch live, or hire the DVD of another show one of the channels stopped airing mid-season. If TEN would like loyal viewers, then please allow me to build that loyalty by keeping a program on for its entire season without disruption. Otherwise, I’ll have to “source elsewhere”, then watch it again when I buy the DVD in 2010, not when, or if, it finally airs on TEN.

Is there an address I can write to at TEN to complain? The “you blogged, we listened” thing is not reliable enough, otherwise the channels would stop doing this as there are always so many complaints every time they do it.

  14. I’ve kinda been expecting 10 to stop Supernatural…………it’s what they do, they suck big time and they always use the good old ratings excuse………..if they hate the show so much sell it to another station. Supernatural is the only show I watch on free to air…………..stupid twats

  15. Californication and the Cleveland show rated equally as low this week but (so far) we have not seen Ten jump and replace animation night with Wednesday movies.

They should have left Monday night as is, realising that most of their shows are rating 350-500k this time of year. Even NCIS struggles at 650k when repeats of the show in winter were reaching double that.

And also – why would they have not waited a week to see what the +7 DVR figures were?

  16. I’m not surprised SG Universe got the chop, it was of extremely poor quality and the writing lacked that imaginative/creative spark that was present in the original Stargate series.
The pilot episode for “Universe” was weak, but the episode that followed (the one where they were walking aimlessly through the sand) was downright dreadful and embarrassing to watch.
Please do Not put this back on the air, for once I agree with Network Ten – SG: Universe was crap.

  17. I agree with Daniel … the people with the Ratings Boxes just love watching crap … that is why so many good, interesting and different shows never get a decent go!

I have also watched every episode of Universe again as aired on 10 as well as seeing them previously … but the whole point of this seemingly never-ending fiasco called “ratings”is that the people who are passionate about shows and TV in general are not the ones with the ratings boxes … this needs to change!!!! And therefore, that is exactly why people download, otherwise we may never get to see these shows!

Fix the ratings system in Australia and then we will have decent TV to watch and people won’t need to download any more!

And 10 needs to get rid of that idiotic Sport Channel!
    Jack!

    1. As imperfect as the Ratings system is, it is on par with the US and most international standards. It is also owned by the 3 commercial networks. If they didn’t feel it represented the nation they have the capacity to change it. Whatever misrepresentation is there, it is also there for shows that rate big so therefore everything is proportionate. We don’t see people complaining when a show gets 2m as being unfair…..

I would also like to remind people of Comments Policy in relation to downloading comments. As this site deals with networks please refrain from saying “I download etc” for what is still an illegal act. Downloading as a subject can be discussed because illegal acts do exist in society but please try to observe this fine line which openly encourages it. Best way around it is to say “source elsewhere” or “seen by other means” etc which could cover you legally seeing the show while overseas or via legal DVD import. I know it’s a drag, but it has always been this site’s policy, to avoid being seen as part of a pirate culture. While we’re at it CAPS and links are also out under Comments Policy (see footer). Ok, the boring stuff is out of the way. Happy New Year guys!

  18. RE: Downloading it.

I watched it when i was in the states, When it aired here i watched it live.

If the people with ratings boxes don’t watch what they download they are doing a disservice to the community and should give up the boxes.

The problem (and i’ve said it before) the ratings system just doesn’t work . In the states it gets 2.57mil which is only 5.3x the aussie rating, which is proportionally great (esp considering Aussies apparent dislike of sci fi).

SGU is also (well i should say supposedly, since i cant trust the flawed ratings system) the most watched stargate franchise since 2005.

Back to alternate methods of watching i suppose (although its off til april so it’ll be a while for 10 to redeem themselves, although perhaps its just off for jan then itll be back).

  19. SGU is a slow burner, & differs in style quite markedly from the previous Stargate incarnations. It’s not action packed so far, & develops the characters incrementally. Robert Carlyle’s role is kinda like a slightly more darkside House md, so he’s not exactly a likable character to many viewers. The show
is too slow & dull to be an instant hit & ratings grabber, but I still have some faith that it will grow (only seen the first 10 eps).

Supernatural – you either like it or you don’t. It’s a bit late at season 5 to find a new audience, & the devoted fans will, in all likelihood, have sampled it elsewhere already. I certainly have.

As such, both shows were very unlikely to be big audience pulls for Channel 10, & the execs would have been very unwise to expect otherwise. They are both reasonable shows to the casual viewer, but to dump/bump them for relatively poor ratings is not rational, especially at this time of year. It was a thankless schedule for either show.

  20. SGU sucks bad trust me it’s get’s worse and worse.

Spoiler alert!, Life is the worst episode of all, there is no Sci-fi content in that episode and the show is too much like days of our lives. Way Toooooooo soapppy for my liking. They’ve killed off Sci-Fi and a great concept also.

I hope it does get better next season, I fear the worst for SGA no movie has not been announced 🙁
