The critically acclaimed US cable drama Breaking Bad will have its Free to Air premiere at 9:30pm Friday January 22nd on ABC2.
It will follow the third episode of Torchwood: Children of Earth.
Created and produced by Vince Gilligan (The X Files) the series has already aired on Pay TV but is certainly worth a look if only for the performance of Bryan Cranston who has two Emmy Awards for his performance as the dysfunctional father given just two years to live. He has beaten such competition as Hugh Laurie, Michael C. Hall, Simon Baker, Jon Hamm, Gabriel Byrne and James Spader.
Once a successful research chemist, but now relegated to teaching in a New Mexico high school, Walter White (Bryan Cranston) is diagnosed with cancer and given only two years to live.
Choosing to keep the bad news from his wife, Skyler (Anna Gunn), and their disabled teenage son, he vows to do whatever it takes to provide for his family’s future.
Opportunity knocks when his DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) agent brother-in-law busts a local meth operation, inspiring Walt to start his own mobile drug lab and enlist a former student, Jesse (Aaron Paul), as his partner. When forced to kill a pair of vengeful drug dealers and then tell Skyler about his illness, he’s left with nothing to lose.
Desperate to stay one step ahead of the law and his drug-dealing rivals, Walt undergoes an exhilarating transformation from struggling husband and father to ruthless competitor in the drug trade’s criminal underworld.
Starring Bryan Cranston (Malcolm in the Middle), Aaron Paul (Mission: Impossible III) Anna Gunn (Deadwood), Betsy Brandt (Shelf Life) and Dean Norris (Little Miss Sunshine).

Breaking Bad is a brilliant show, Last friday was the final episode in series one….does anyone know if/when series 2 will be on……..I think I will buy the dvd’s as I have to see the second series….Outstanding show.
This channel seems where ABC like to put their American shows. Wouldn’t want to upset the rusted-on viewers over at ABC1, would we? 😉
An outstanding show. Would have thought more than capable of being on prime time on ABC1 but I guess ABC have to test the waters. Some quality performances not just from Cranston but also Aaron Paul, Anna Gunn and Raymond Cruz. One of my favourite shows from the past few years.
The ABC is quickly becoming my favourite network. The shows they have acquired for 2010 along with a slew of current programs. Particularly ABC2 after 6pm. I’ll definitely give this show a watch.
Its about time
David, do you know if this will be a Mad Men situation where the show will continue to be almost two years behind for its entire FTA run?
And wow, there’s no comparison to Dexter. There’s no way Breaking Bad will ever go nearly as far off the reservation as Dexter has.
Not sure. ABC ran 2 (nearly 3) Torchwood seasons back to back but then it started much later.
Fantastic show. Its worth watching the reruns of it.
A Shame it won’t be shown on ABC1 in HD, especially with the poor picture on ABC2 since the ABC3 launch.
Will try to check it out. Looks like Friday night now has something new and interesting to watch. 🙂
To me season 1 was a bit slow, but season 2 was engaging and riveting. (the scenes with Tuco in the season 2 premiere were gold!) Still doesn’t hold a candle to Dexter, but worth a watch.
It seems highly recommended. I will check it out.
Agreed…Everyone..watch this show! Awesome performances and writing. Well worth your time.
It’s not worth a look just for Cranston (although he is mesmerisingly good!). It’s a brilliantly written drama about a good man who makes the wrong decisions. Utterly enthralling, thrilling and just so damn entertaining! Watch it people!
Great show and good news for FTA viewers.
For anyone that has not tuned into Breaking Bad, I highly recommend that you do… The US commence with a new season in early March from memory.
Interesting to note that this show, and Hung, are now being aired on FTA networks, when already aired and possibly viewed by those lucky enough to have Foxtel. Are the FTA networks seeing a success with these shows on Foxtel, or just a tad late in grabbing them to air first.
Off topic slightly David… but I see where Season 3 of Damages commences in the US later this month. Have Foxtel released a date for airing this in Australia? (My magazine has not turned up this month)..
Worthy than more than just a look for Bryan Cranstons performance; add to what is a brilliant performance; quality scripts; riveting storylines and brilliant production values has made Breaking Bad one of the most unique and thrilling shows on the box.
I just finished a marathon on both Seasons 1 and 2 and am absolutely hanging for Season 3 to start state-side.
Absolutely Brilliant show.
