Kerry Armstrong returns for the second series of Bed of Roses with Julia Blake and the last ever television role for the late Charles ‘Bud’ Tingwell.

Kerry Armstrong returns for the second series of Bed of Roses this Saturday, joined once more by Hanna Mangan-Lawrence as Holly and Julia Blake as Minna Franklin.

Also returning are Jay Laga’aia, Kaarin Fairfax, Caroline Gillmer, Dina Panozzo and Andrew S. Gilbert. Joining the cast are Phillip Quast and the last ever television role for the late Charles ‘Bud’ Tingwell.

When Louisa Atherton (Kerry Armstrong) decided to stay in Rainbow’s End she thought things were going to be simpler, but she didn’t count on how difficult it is to work out what to do with the rest of your life. When charming, sophisticated Tim Price (Philip Quast) takes over the management of local newspaper The Rainbow Echo , he recognises Louisa’s talents and offers her a key position.

But she soon realises that the economic viability of the paper is always going to take precedence over her ambitions as a journalist – this means advertising, more advertising, and ongoing conflict with Tim. Life is further complicated by the fact that her daughter Holly (Hanna Mangan‐Lawrence) is growing up and taking more than a keen interest in all things environmental ‐ an interest which throws her headlong into the path of protests and big mining companies.

In fact Holly is becoming more and more like her once bolshy grandmother Minna (Julia Blake), while to Louisa’s dismay, Minna herself is now really beginning to show signs of ageing. To make matters worse Louisa
might be falling in love – the problem is she doesn’t know with which man – Tim Price or long time friend Nick Pickering (Jay Laga’aia).

Climate change, community gardens and gold mines, growing up, growing old and the right to choose life’s ending. Add a cockatoo, a goat called G‐aaar‐th, the ellusive golden speckled leaping legless lizard, and maybe even finding love at 50 and you have the story of Louisa Atherton, her family, her friends, and the community of Rainbow’s End, who choose to make a difference, and who discover that they can.

The series returns at 7:30pm this Saturday on ABC1.

  1. @ Ronnie, i understand the last episode was preposterous in series 1. Glad u gave ep1 series 2 a go. I know it isn’t for everyone. lets hope something u like airs in this time slot soon 🙂

  2. I’m not convinced Saturday night is the best time for it, but I’ll be sitting there ready this Saturday. I enjoyed this gentle drama last time around, and will be interested to see what happens. We need some gentle shows (this, and East of Everything for instance) as the antidote to all the acronym murder franchise shows.

  3. Well l enjoyed series 1,and l am looking foward to watching the second. It has a great cast who are very talented.Kerry still acting 30 years later after appearing in prisoner as Wonky Lyn Warner in 1979.

  4. @ Nik C I watched most of the first series and definately saw the last preposterous episode where she discovers a gold nugget in her front yard which solved a lot of problems for writers. @Stephen H – Agreed, up there with PTTR and yes, 12 more coming before we’ve even seen the second series. Cannot believe they have a big turd in the promos. The media will have a field day. Who is steering the ship at the ABC?

  5. Then don’t watch Ronnie I think this show is up there with Packed To The Rafters when it comes to quality. Also hasn’t it been renewed for a third season of 12 episodes already after current 8 eps in season2 I’m sure I heard it has?

  6. Umm excuse me Ronnie, did you actually watch the first season? This is exactly what the ABC demographic enjoy on a Saturday. A good Aussie drama. If “soft” drama means less sex, violence and nudity then, it is good that we have some on Aussie TV!
Watch the Bill @ 8.30 or do something else!

  7. I think the ABC has laid a giant turd with this one! More Australian drama for 830 Sunday night please, or 830 Friday when there is a dedicated audience – not more of this fluff. I am sick of this “soft” drama for 730 Saturday. Lame, tame, same, same.
