TEN wants live Friday AFL too

TEN reckons AFL should be live because "that's where consumers expect the code to be."

More pressure on Seven today as TEN matches Channel Nine’s plans to show live Friday night football if it is successful in the next AFL rights bid.

”All rights should be dealt with in a live capacity, because I think that’s where consumers expect the code to be,” CEO Grant Blackley has told The Age.

Asked whether TEN would show Friday night football live, he said: ”Yes, we would.”

Seven’s position so far is it is sticking with Better Homes and Gardens.

  1. Lets face it we all want live AFL, I want it in Sydney.
Showing games delayed till 10.30pm is stupid.
Why cant the AFL just get on with it now particularly if the AFL want to grow the game in Sydney.

  2. i think that fri nights afl needs to go to one channel as at the moment it stupid i have foxtell dont get to see the game unti 1hour and a half delayed telecast 830 pm on seven with all the adds at halftime the game dosent end untill 1130pm cmon ten or one hd wich is supposed to be a sport channel grow some balls and play live football foxtell is s**t as i have it and we dont get fri night games live either 930 pm for them

  3. AFL should always be live, no matter what channel or state. So should NRL. All games should be live broadcast except if Channel 9 gets the rights to both.

Then they could Broadcast NRL on Nine and AFL on GO in QLD/NSW/ACT, and vice-versa for TAS/VIC/SA/NT/WA.

Same could go for 10 and ONE if they make a strive for the NRL because of ONEHD.

  4. Hi David,

I’m “bumping” this, if that’s okay.

So, here we go, first game of the new season, and 10 are showing the game in South Australia an hour after it starts. If 10, or any other FTA network is serious about showing AFL live, they should seize every opportunity. It’s the only way to maiximise the return on their considerable investment.

  5. Ten should be lobbying for weekday night AFL for the 2012+ rights, that would be a huge hit.
Friday night AFL on Ten would be a very good result for fans as well.

  6. Wait up a minute… does that mean Ch 10, ONE SD and ONE HD would all broadcast Football on TV at the same time?!

Guys, keep it to ONE network so we can watch something else on TEN. Stiff s**t if people don’t have a set top box.

    This is ridiculous!

  7. Anti-siphoning reform (although needed) wont solve this problem. Seven want to show it at 8.30 because they stop the tape and show more ads. They could show Better Homes on Seven2 and footy on seven if they wanted right now.
The only way to fix this is to lobby the afl. The next rights contract should demand live Friday night – problem solved.

  8. Ten seem to be in pole position with their decision to go with sport for their first digital channel. Would be a good reward for persisting with the low ‘combined channel’ ratings they’ve endured

Please keep it off Nine so we don’t have to suffer Eddie McGuire commentating Collingwood games

  9. @pietro

Completely agree – would be great to see Ten get at least 4 games per week (probably in conjunction with Foxtel) and be able to show them live nationally on One (yes, that means WA and SA too). Show the games on Ten with delay if necessary due to other scheduling commitments but at least give fans a chance to choose live sport on One.

Unfortunately we can try and vote with our remote but in the end I think the only way 7 and 9 will lift their game is to take the rights off them for a few years – give it to someone who will actually produce the best product for the game.

  10. Get the games live, for both codes and across the country. The laws need to be changed to allow networks to show the sports live across digital channels. How about Seven buys the rights to the AFL and Nine to the NRL, and they on-sell some of the games and interstate rights to Ten.

Nine could have their two NRL games on of a Friday night (how about alternating the viewing between Nine and Go?), a couple of Saturday night games and a Sunday night game in Sydney and Brisbane. Ten could then have a Sunday night game and the Monday night game in Sydney and Brisbane, but also show all of the other games in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth live on One.
