Two and a Half Men films a new episode this Friday in Burbank, California, but will do so without an audience.
Charlie Sheen was back at work just one day after pleading not guilty in his domestic violence case. Media are making the obvious links to the closed set filming and the personal life of its star as producers “closing ranks” around the star.
With the show’s liberal use of a laugh track, will it make much difference to the finished product anyway?
It isn’t the first time it has gone without an audience.
Earlier this year it did the same thing following security concerns for Jon Cryer, when he received threats which he claimed were related to his broken marriage -none have been proven.
Sheen’s next hearing date for his case is April 19th, with a three-day trial is set beginning on July 21st, but the case could end with a plea deal.

this is the worst show in the entire galaxy!!!!! i don’t find it funny and i don’t understand how it rates so highly all the time – even the repeats. i hate this show. arrggghhh!
@Andy – the show is definetly funny. laughing tracks or not.
Use of laugh tracks + live audience is known in the biz as “Sweetening.” It allows them to sprinkle the show with a little more oomph if the crowd was off.
The creator of The IT Crowd says in a commentary they whip the audience up into such a frenzy while filming the show they laugh too much and he often has to remove live laughs from the audio track. If 2.5 Men have an audience and have to add laughs, that shows how un-funny their show really is.
Artificial laugh tracks are added and edited all the time, Two and a Half Men will be no different. Sitcom finales are never filmed with an audience, it’s why the top 4 viewed finales are all sitcoms (MASH, Cheers, Seinfeld, Friends)
Why have an audience and use a laugh track?
Reminds me of that Family Guy joke, the ostrich is the audience and laughs at the jokes.
Will it make a difference?
Don’t get me wrong I watch it but it’s purely ‘put-brain-into-neutral’ TV no thinking required…
I never knew it had an audience! I thought it was purely laugh track, as there is always laugher when nothing happens.
Sounds like they’re just doing studio audiences a favour…
Do you know which episode was filmed with the laugh track?
