  1. Oh my goodness! The late great Lillian Gish, She’s truly incredible. I happened to be a fan of her silent films. Her work with D.W. Griffith whom she held at great regard until her death in 1993 and the pioneering of ‘silent’ film.

I enjoyed her in ‘Broken Blossoms’, ‘Way Down East’, and ‘The Wind’. In the ‘talkies’ she did ‘Duel In The Sun’ and the magnificent thriller film in ‘The Night of the Hunter’ as a rural foster guardian protecting her charges from a murderous ‘preacher’.

Her last and final film, the elegiacal beautiful ‘The Whales of August’ at the age of 93. A reflection of old age and not surrendering into waiting for death to come but continuing on until the day comes to say goodbye.

A silent star of the cinema, period
