Glee at the Tonys

How did the Glee stars fare at the Tony Awards? Matthew Morrison? Tick. Lea Michele. X.

If you missed the Glee stars at the Tony Awards yesterday check them out here.

Matthew Morrison, who already has several Broadway shows under his belt, was terrific performing a song from Gypsy. Definite contender for 2011 host? His TV appeal and ‘legit theatre’ cred would make him pretty darn perfect.

Lea Michele on the other hand, who is wonderful in Glee, was over the top with her Funny Girl number.

  1. I think Lea is great, but she certainly did struggle with that performance. Matthew was a bit out of breath toward the end, but that was totally ok, as the dancing was fantastic.

  2. I think the assessment of Lea’s performance is really harsh. Performing for theatre and performing for television are two Very different beasts. Her performance at the Tonys was for the room, it just happened to be televised. When you are one person on a stage, aiming it at people sitting a hundred metres away, you do need to make your facial expressions and movements very obvious. It will look silly on tv, no doubt about it. But that wasn’t her focus, her focus was on entertaining those in the room. Her performance of the same song on Glee itself was a lot more subtle for this reason.

Also, have you seen Barbara do it? She isn’t exactly subtle either!!

  3. and Matthew struggled with his breathing towards the end of the number. He was clearly out of breath and struggled with the notes. Weird how people see them the totally opposite way around

Over the top? At the Tonys? Who would’ve thought?
