Insight: Sept 21

Jacques Myard, the French politician who introduced the bill calling for the ban on burqua, is a guest on Insight.

Next week Insight takes a look at a very controversial debate.

Just a week after the French Senate voted to ban the burqa in public places, the first European country to outlaw full-face Islamic veils, Jacques Myard, the French politician who introduced the bill calling for the ban, is a guest on Insight.

Islamic scholar Tariq Ramadan, who does not support the ban and believes it will only inflame tensions between Islam and the West is also a guest.

In the discussion in France about the banning of the burqa, President Nicolas Sarkozy said in Parliament: “We cannot accept that in our country some women will be imprisoned behind a fence, cut off from all social life, deprived of identity. This is not a principle that the French Republic has about women’s dignity.”

Australian Muslim women who have chosen to wear the burqa will be among the studio guests, as well as Federal Liberal Senator Cory Bernardi, who strongly supports a ban, saying that wearing the burqa is a security issue.

In Australia, a recent decision by a judge to have a witness remove her face veil sparked controversy and recent polls show the majority of Australians would support the banning of the burqa.

Following the broadcast on September 21 of Insight – which is presented by Jenny Brockie – there will be a one-hour online discussion at www.sbs.com.au/insight with Senator Cory Bernardi, Tanveer Ahmud and Muslim Amina Jhafoor.

It airs 7:30pm Tuesday on SBS ONE.

  1. Nor does it mention the niqab or even Islam but President Sarkozy made it abundantly clear who and what the bill was directed at when he was publicly promoting it. The French govt and Sarkozy in particular seems to like enacting lots of legislation hastily drawn up in response to “public outrage”, and then fails to enforce it. The bill won’t actually become law until it’s passed by the Constitutional Council, which is not a given.
