Airdate: Extras Christmas Special

George Michael, David Tennant, Clive Owen and Gordon Ramsay all guest star in this 2007 special.

If you’ve never seen The Extras Christmas Special (2007) it will get a run on ABC2 on Christmas Day.

It’s a very funny episode, with Ricky Gervais, Ashley Jensen and Stephen Merchant plus guest appearances from George Michael (wait until you see where), David Tennant, Clive Owen and Gordon Ramsay.

The special brings the series to a close.

Picking up where series two ended, former ‘background artist’ Andy Millman (Ricky Gervais) has finally achieved fame and fortune with his own BBC sitcom When the Whistle Blows. His transformation from bit-part stand-in to household name is now complete. He has the house overlooking Hampstead Heath, has a range of supporting merchandise and is photographed and recognised wherever he goes.

But Andy’s not content and longs for critical acclaim as a ‘serious’ actor. Not getting the desired offers coming in, he fires his long term agent (Stephen Merchant) and gets a new, hot shot agent.

Meanwhile best friend Maggie (Ashley Jensen) is finding life harder and harder to fathom, as her luck has gone from bad to worse. After giving up working as an extra, she’s living on the breadline taking cleaning jobs instead to make ends meet.

Andy’s hit sitcom has suffered so many changes that it bears no resemblance to his original idea. As his discontent grows, could he pull the plug on his own show in the hope of chasing long held dreams?

It airs at 8:35pm Saturday, 25 December.

  1. I was a fan of the The Extra series’, but this “Christmas Special” it hardly uplifting and is rarely humourous. It’s quite depressing really watching Maggie on struggle street and Andy attempting to become a ‘serious actor’. For fans only, and then only to see how the series closes out.

  2. This is not the first run for this episode in Australia. Its first Australian TV run was on pay TV, but ABC has run through Extras complete a few times already.
