Doctor Who returns to UK, US at Easter

The next season of Doctor Who is confirmed to air in Britain and the US over the Easter weekend.

No surprises here.

Doctor Who Magazine reports that the new season of Doctor Who will launch in Britain over the Easter weekend (April 23). It will also air in the US on the same calendar date, via BBC America.

This season is split in two blocksm with the tagline: “Trust Your Doctor.”

“The Doctor (Matt Smith), and his companions Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill), find themselves on a secret summons that takes them on an adventure from the desert in Utah — right to the Oval Office in 1969.”

No date for Australia has yet been announced but ABC1 programmer Brendan Dahill has previously indicated the show would be rolled out much faster here than previous seasons. Fans will recall the Boxing Day broadcast for the Christmas special as evidence of that.

Dahill recently told TV Tonight, “Australians are great downloaders and they don’t want to wait until Easter to see a Christmas episode, so if we can get it out straight away we will.”

  1. A spanner in the works: next weekend in the 7:30pm slot Human Planet premieres- and it’s an 8 part series. If it runs through to completion it’ll play through Easter. A few alternatives if Doctor Who is to play on the same weekend:

    1) the ABC interrupts Human Planet mid-season;
    2) the ABC runs Doctor Who at the current timeslot, 5:45pm;
    3) the ABC runs Doctor Who on Saturday; or
    4) the ABC runs Doctor Who after Human Planet.

    You forgot to account for A Christmas Carol because the ABC does rerun it it will mean we won’t see the new season until the weekafter.

    It will rather interesting if the ABC does decide to rerun A Christmas Carol on the Easter weekend.

  3. I just hope this really is fast-tracked. A lot of the time when they say (promise) they’re going to fast track a show it means a good week or two later til it’s actually broadcast here in the ass end of the universe. This may be better than the old days but it still isn’t good enough in this day and age. Mind you, I bet a certain percentage of people will still d/load the show rather than wait a few hours to get their geek fix.

  4. I hope we get it the same weekend as the UK/US folks. Would be nice to not have to avoid spoilers and it would make for more lively discussion online!

  5. I’m going to make a bold prediction based on the fact they’re currently re-airing the 5th series on Sunday afternoons (@ around 5:40 if you want to watch.) I’ve worked out it finished on the 17th of April, the 24th is the day of (or after) broadcast.

    So maybe they’ll fast track the series so we have it in the hours after the UK.

    One can hope.

  6. Yes, 7:30 on Sunday nights would be just perfect!!!!
    Thanks Mr ABC!!!

    And Woops! I thought everyone knew about the Easter start … I have been subscribing to Dr Who Magazine for years … you can also get it, a few months late, at your local newsagent!

  7. Since it airs in the UK on Saturday nights (Sunday morning our time) then the ABC should be fast tracking them a few hours later Sunday night here. JMO

    Can’t wait for this one!
