Prime7 adds AFL to 7mate

While we await the new Anti-Siphoning List the government has been granting broadcasters more flexibility for sport on their channels.

Last night’s AFL match on TEN was also broadcast around the country on ONE.

In NSW and Queensland such a move has been traditionally impossible under the anti-siphoning list (and until the revised list is legislated it still is). But TEN sought permission from Senator Conroy to play the season opener on its digital channel, which was granted by the government.

From tonight PRIME7 will also televise 2011 Friday Night AFL on its multi-channel, 7mate at 8.30pm.

It will be the only FTA channel for viewers across regional New South Wales and the ACT to see the code every Friday night at the same time as AFL fans in Victoria.

Chief Executive Officer Doug Edwards said: “We are very happy to work with the AFL and the Seven Network to give viewers in regional NSW and the ACT this exclusive broadcast of Friday Night AFL. I would also like to acknowledge the support of Senator [Stephen] Conroy who has authorised the use of our digital multi-channel for the broadcast of these Friday Night AFL games.”

Kicking off 7mate’s Friday night coverage this week will be a rematch of the 2009 Grand Final between the Geelong and St Kilda under lights from the MCG.

In contrast to the Prime7 move, the game doesn’t air on Seven in Sydney until 11:30pm.

  1. i think it’s time they give up on the super wall. showing it when no one can access it. doesn’t mean you’re doing a good job of covering sport you douche bags.

  2. For those wondwering why Seven don’t do the same with Mate in Sydney and Brisbane, it is probably due to the broadcast deal Seven and Ten made with Fox. Part of the deal is quite probably (no inside knowledge, just a vague memory and some presumption) that Fox has exclusive rights in Sydney and Brisbane for the duraton of the Fox broadcast – i.e. that FTA are blocked from showing Friday night games in metro markets.
As those regional areas are serviced by Austar, that might not apply – regional on-sell rights may not have included Austar, Fox being the content re-sellers there.

  3. I’m sure the NRL would get around 9,000 in Melbourne too if it was shown live on Gem or Go, which is why it’s smart of 9 to keep it at midnight.
