Airdate: The Pillars of the Earth

The W channel will air the Australian television premiere of The Pillars of the Earth mini-series, commercial-free.

The W channel will air the Australian television premiere of The Pillars of the Earth mini-series, commercial-free later this month.

Based on Ken Follett’s novel, it will screen over four successive nights starting Tuesday, April 26 at 8.30pm AEST.

The eight hour miniseries stars Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell, Andrew Macfadyen, Eddie Redmayne, Hayley Atwell and Donald Sutherland.

This is an enduring love story set against the backdrop of the building of a great cathedral and the religious and political turmoil of 12th century England. The mini-series was shot on location in Hungary and Austria.

“With its remarkable production values and stellar cast, The Pillars of the Earth enhances W’s reputation as a home for quality Australian and international dramas and we are proud to premiere the mini-series commercial-free,” said channel manager Penny Win.

The Pillars of the Earth is a tale of good and evil, treachery and intrigue, violence and beauty, entwining the lives and loves of its characters: Waleran (McShane) the ambitious bishop, Tom (Sewell) the master builder, Philip (Macfadyen) the prior of Kingsbridge, Aliena (Atwell) the noblewoman, her father the Earl of Shiring (Sutherland), the sadistic Lord William (David Oakes), Jack (Redmayne) the artist in stonework, and his mother Ellen (Sarah Parish), the woman from the forest who casts a curse.

13TH STREET’s Tara Moss sat down with Follett in Sydney late last year, to discuss his amazing writing career, and this interview will be airing on the channel from April 1, and will also be available on www.13thstreetuniversal.com.au

  1. This looks good, but I was hoping they (W) would air it over 8 hours the following weekend, guess I’ll have to move a few things around, thank god for payTV showing things multiply times over the week!

  2. Sounds terrific!
Ian McShane – one of my favourite actors!
Belinda, you wouldn’t get it commercial-free on FTA.
This is why I continue paying Foxtel.
FTA would have added about 2 and 1/2 hours of ads. Ugh.

  3. Highly recommend this – if anyone had told me a year ago a drama about building a cathedral would have been one of the TV highlights of the year I wouldn’t have believed them, but it was one of the best things on TV last year.
