Variety the key to success

Nine and TEN made subtle in-roads to try and tackle Seven's stronghold on the ratings, but it wasn't enough to topple their diverse schedule.

Last week Nine and TEN made subtle in-roads to try and tackle Seven’s stronghold on the ratings, but it wasn’t enough to topple the year’s runaway leader.

TEN is now coding MasterChef episodes separately with OzTAM (a strategy Seven employed for My Kitchen Rules) rather than averaging out a figure across several of its episodes. The move doesn’t affect shares, but it does look a lot nicer in a Top 20 and end of year results.

Nine’s Come Fly With Me pulled an impressive audience on Mondays, possibly spurred on by a flimsy controversy triggered by regional broadcasters.

But it was again Australia’s Got Talent that ruled the week, at just under 1.8m viewers.

SBS pulled a big share for Sunday night thanks to Eurovision, with SBS ONE even topping ABC1 in primary channels.

With a diverse schedule of programming, Seven was again able to win Week 21 of ratings.

  1. Most of the old movies they are showing are hardly classics, crappy old westerns mainly, fine if your into westerns but its not like they’re showing Hitchcock classics etc. They have however improved on their selection of movies at night, with some decent 70’s thrillers & horrors.

@David Dyer are you being sarcastic or have you lost the plot??

Good to see 7 have learnt their lesson from the fiasco that was X-Factor, this time the acts actually do have talent.

  2. When I was young watching old movies on weekend TV was one of the major introductions I had to cinema history and the great films and stars of the past. For many years younger people were denied this as sport reigned on all stations. I’m really pleased young people are now getting that choice again (they can discover black + white films can be fantastic). I hope parents encourage them to try these old films – it should be part of everyone’s education!!!

  3. Harold do you watch GEM? – B&W movies are only on the weekend during the day, I’m glad it provides something different to GO!/Mate & Eleven. Of the digitals I only watch 7 Two ABC2 & GEM. Looking at the numbers above Mate did a 3.1 Eleven did a 3.1 GEM did a 2.9 & One did a 2.7, seems like they’re all getting a decent slice of the numbers, I doubt they’ll be re branding anytime soon.

  4. Message to Ten and Nine viewers, watch more of their shows (though I still advise you to wait till later for the DVDs/Blu-rays of the BBC Worldwide stuff to come out)! We need to avenge Ten and Nine now! Also, watch more ABC1! Seven must be stopped.

PS. I wonder if Seven has spies inside the other networks? No wonder why Seven creamed Nine and Ten in the first part of ratings.
PPS. Does Free TV Australia have rules against TV network spies in their Code Of Practice?

  5. I second Cooky’s comments, thanks David! Always enjoy reading these weekly wrap-ups/network overviews.

I’m happy that The Good Wife and Castle have been getting solid ratings lately, two fantastic shows.

  6. If i were nine, i’d be Very worried about ten taking the second position in primary channel and network.
It looks like the relaunching of One HD has worked to ten’s favour. making a point of HD movies, HD sport etc is really cutting though.
How far way is a relaunch of GEM? 3 months, 6 months.
showing 1940’s movies isn’t really cutting it. They ve got the HD bandwidth use it.

  7. Thanks for the posting David. Always look forward to your weekly wrap up!

So with State of Origin Game one this week, what numbers are we expecting for that? 2 mil at least? It’s probably the only night this week that Nine can guarantee a win and in past years, led to winning the week too. But Seven will probably still win the week regardless.

I think when Nine can’t win the week with a State of Origin game, it just shows you the state of play at the moment (pardon pun).

  8. Disappointing start for Offspring. With Asher’s recent success’s (and, of course, her turn in Paper Giants) I thought it would do 1.2-1.3M, and really find its audience this year.
