Matt Preston’s very own mystery box

MasterChef's Hayden doesn't win a second Immunity pin after all. So what was that all about on Matt Preston's Facebook?

Last night MasterChef contstant Hayden didn’t win that Immunity pin, in a curious case of Spoilers, Typos, Spin and Media Wild Goose Chases.

It all began on Monday when Preston published the following on his Facebook page “So Hayden now has two Immunity pins. Do you think he should be able to give one away? He’s a nice guy, but maybe not that nice hey?”

His readers accused him of Spoiling Tuesday night’s Immunity challenge.

With that the page in question was deleted and replaced with “Good to see so many people are following my posts so closely…and apologies for the confusion. Hayden has immunity this week, if he wins the cook-off he’ll be making history with two immunity pins. But will he? You had better be watching MasterChef this week to find out!”

On Monday TEN Publicity contacted TV Tonight to advise: “The post that has been uploaded on Matt Preston’s Facebook page today was a mistype. It should have read – ‘If Hayden wins a second immunity pin should he be able to give one of them away? And do you think he would? He’s a nice guy, but is he that nice?'”

That meant a mistype at the top of the sentence, plus punctuation and a change of intent.  Quite a mistype for someone of Preston’s journalistic experience.

Deleting the post only furthered the mystery.

Preston now says, “I said on Monday it was a wording error on my #FB page not a spoiler!!! Pity so many journos & tweeters who felt they you knew better”  (actually there’s another typo right there, but at least it doesn’t alter the intent).

Today some of his followers are either cheekily chastising him for a stunt, gushing in praise or refusing point blank to believe the explanation.

So was it a stunt? Was Preston jet-lagged at the time he made his apparent typo/s? Does Hayden win another Immunity pin in an episode that has been filmed but not aired?

Who knows….

But if history teaches us anything it is that the mix-up will almost surely unravel eventually, maybe after a cast party and a few bevvys -and that Spellcheck is sometimes a writer’s best friend.

  1. I don’t believe Matt Preston wrote any of those comments. I cannot imagine that a food critic who has a job that relies on his tasting and writing skills would post anything with a “typo” in it!!!!

  2. to the people who believe 4/10 was unfair in an immunity challenge.

what other time has raw pork been served in an immunity challenge?

if you’ve never seen raw meat served in an immunity challenge, how do you know what score it deserves?

  3. @ Blindowl, I don’t know what show you have been watching but the judges always do a blind tasting on Tuesday night.

Gary is not involved in the judging and the 3 who do judge are only told ‘plate 1’ and ‘plate 2.’

So I don’t really understand your comment ?

  4. Personally, I would have given Hayden a 5 or 4 – you can’t serve raw pork – as the judges pointed out raw pork is dangerous – must have something to do with pork and the bacteria.

I hate all the meat they cook on this show – they are so bias to vegetarian food.

  5. @MJR

Sorry but as George said, he has to score by what is in front of him which was basically food poisoning. Hayden stuffed himself up by spending too much time cleaning up the rack bones which he pointed out himself. All is fair

  6. Will never watch another episode of Masterchef again. A few of us watched
it last night, and because George gave Hayden a ‘4’, it was obviously on
purpose to make Hayden lose. I agree with MJR that George would never have done that to a professional chef.
Has been pretty boring anyway, so thank goodness we can watch the whole
    of AGT in future.

  7. I did the same as @Catherine, but must admit I’m never that interested in the Tuesday night shows (or Fridays, for that matter). The only way they will ever get over the obvious bias shown by the judges (particularly George) is for there to only ever be blind tastings. Let Gary, Matt and a guest judge blind taste, and let George run around the kitchen during the cooking.

  8. I think Masterchef are resorting to Dancing with The Stars like publicity to get on the media this season. The ratings a down slightly and it smells of deperation to me. Don’t belive anything Matt says, he mentioned on a radio interview that he never uses fake tan either! His face is as orange and peach as a fruit salad this season!

  9. I love this show but OMG last nights show was a crock with a 4 given to hayden by george. There has never been a low score for these challanges before, even ones with hairs in dishes and crab shells. Not a underdone piece of pork.
Look at the other end george and it looked all ok.There is no way he would give that score to a proffessional chef. The embarishment would be to great and future of a chef getting a score 0f 4/10.
    Hayden diserves a 2nd pin.

  10. Well I didnt watch it because of this and I wanted to watch AGT but I flicked at the end to see the scores. Hayden would be kicking himself. You wouldnt get a better opportunity to win when the celeb chef only scores 21.

Wether it was a publicity stunt to get people watching because AGT has been beating them I dont know.

But Matt Preston I watched AGT because ch7 show all the contestants not just 3/4s of them like you do.

  11. Ratings publicity grab, for sure. Preston is a journalist, there is no way he would accidentally make a typo like that involving such a specific mistyped word and the punctuation which completely botches what he meant. Either that, or his PA or some other lackey maintains his FB page and they typed it in wrongly, but there is no way I believe Preston himself made a mistake like that.
