SBS announces Go Back to Where You Came From: the forum

All six participants from SBS' refugee-based series will join a forum hosted by Anton Enus, set to air next week.

SBS has announced a special forum on its successful refugee-based experiment, Go Back To Where You Came From.

Anton Enus will host the forum which features all six participants: Adam, Gleny, Raye, Raquel, Darren, Roderick and their family and friends.

The remainder of the audience will be sourced from Australians who engaged in the debate on various social media platforms as the series went to air.

Since premiering on Tuesday night, the series has ignited debate on Twitter and in the media, including a report in the New York Times and another in the Sydney Morning Herald today which brands it “a series for the gullible.”

“The six participants who took part in the confronting 25 day refugee journey in reverse will reflect on their experiences and the impact the series has had on their lives and on the debate about refugees and asylum seekers in Australia,” SBS Managing Director Michael Ebeid said.

“Everyone involved with this production realised very early on that this was going to be powerful, life-changing, agenda setting television. But I think we are all heartened and pleased at the pervasiveness of the response.

“National and international mainstream media have used it has a platform to consider the global refugee debate and the incredible response on social media has demonstrated an appetite for intelligent and relevant television content.

“The live forum will help those who watched the series discover the extent to which it has affected the views of the six participants towards refugees and how their lives have changed since embarking on their incredible journey.”

The final episode in the three-part series airs at 8:30pm tonight.

The Go Back To Where You Came From: Special Event will be made by Cordell Jigsaw Productions and will air Tuesday June 28 on SBS ONE at 8.30pm.

  1. Richard, while your idea of troops heading in to help keep the peace in countries such as the DEmocratic Republic of Congo, is good – not new – but good, that would breach a country’s sovereignty and open the world up to a whole new breed of facism.
My ancestors came to Australia from Ireland and were facing the same persecution and dehumanising as the world’s current incarnation of refugees are. Different faces, different times, same horrible xenophobia.
As they say in the finale of this show, the intention was for this series to highlight the complexity inherent in this issue.
It isn’t clear-cut, never has been and never will.
I am 22-years old, have worked with different kinds of refugees both in Aus and in India, and I for one hope and pray for our nation to start putting things into perspective.
And the great truth here is that a large portion of my generation is striving for a more inclusive Australia.
By all means, chose which side you’re on but know a change is coming.

  2. Thank you for creating a program which challenges the misinformation which often surrounds refugees and asylum seekers. It has been my privilege to meet many refugees and I can vouch for the fact that these noble, kind people have much to offer their new country.

I implore SBS to continue the impetus from this program – to show ordinary Aussies what we can do to assist refugees, and how we can call our politicians to account for their inhumane treatment of refugees and asylum seekers.

  3. It is so sad to see what the dark, selfish, closed minded evil Cabal have helped to create. It is all about control, money making and power seeking. The negative energy they seem to have created and instil in our human Brothers and Sisters has resulted in what we have seen in this show.

Regardless of what ridiculous comments are made about the show, at the end of the day it is real, it is a totally unnecessary path humans have chosen and the time has come for the human race to grow up! Perhaps we Australians can lead the way!

My heart, my emotions have had another reality check and the tears I am shedding are real and tainted with the blood of those who have suffered so much. I pray to the higher sources of our being for the time of times to arrive for man to “See” and not just look.

Love and Light to all Humanity

  4. leslie, I would probably have to fight for people likeyou, having been around this world many times in service and on holidays I have seen quite a lot in my time so I rather think I would have seen and been part of a lot more than you my dear, where have you been?

  5. In response to what “Gordon” commented on the 24th of June. The reason SBS created this show was so that we Australians, new and old, are aware of what it means to be a refugee or an asylum seeker. It is not illegal to be a refugee. Why do some of us look as if it is criminal? I see greed and selfishness as one of the main factors that you/we reject those that need help help here and in the world around us.Hopefully it is by SBS broadcasting such a program that you may create some action and not be just a part of that…… “bunch of white caucasions being what I would call as pure observationists” but be more than an observer and create change.

Comment by Richard: What would you be standing to defend if you don’t have the basics of life? It appears that you are not from this land that you faught for!
Wake up to yourself. Knowledge shared is knowledge gained……….and so are basic rights.

  6. what do you think you have acheived by this program to the low wage earners and pensioners struggling here in our land ,the land that some of them faught for and so many lost the lives, don’t you get it yet, It’s the so called united nations and their big meetings that you should be targeting the so called peace keepers that was formed after the 2nd WW, there should have been 10000 troops from the countries that made it up in the begining and sent out to anywhere in the world there was trouble, you would never have had Iddy armin, pol pot gadaffi and the list goes on, stop putting the ball in our court all the time, If some body started to try and take my house and land here I would stand and fight, start attacking the sourse of the problem, more welfare people here the less the people that worked hard for this country will get, sometimes you people cannot see the wood for the trees

  7. I don’t really understand why SBS would make a reality TV programme out of this just because we do have boat people and asylum seekers in Australia.I feel that it is in bad taste giving the not so fortunate hope in a world where these poor peoples lives are in desparate turmoil.okay all those who participate had an experience they learned and change and come away with different emotions-however they all came back to Australia.Emotional support is one thing but theses poor people need action not just a bunch of white caucasions being what I would call as pure observationists.

  8. Was the twenty-something chain smoking, foul-mouthed bogan just putting on a show for the cameras or is she really that arrogant and self-centered?
