First on Nine -live from the helipad

Nine News is launching an internal inquiry into why its Brisbane weekend bulletins faked a live cross to reporters in its helicopter.

Nine News is launching an internal inquiry into why its Brisbane weekend bulletins faked a live cross to reporters in its helicopter.

On Saturday reporter Melissa Mallet was covering the Daniel Morcombe search, supposedly “near Beerwah” but Airservices Australia evidence suggests the chopper was orbiting near Nine’s Mt Coot-tha studio for 10 minutes prior to the cross. As soon as the cross was over, the chopper returned to the studios only a couple of hundred metres away.

On Sunday reporter Cameron Price, presented another chopper cross, again with the words “near Beerwah” on the screen. But this time the chopper didn’t even take off from the helipad.

Nine honchos in Sydney are believed to be fuming over the incident and ordered an internal investigation.

A Nine Spokesperson told TV Tonight, “During Saturday and Sunday night’s Brisbane bulletin we crossed live to a reporter in our helicopter updating the Daniel Morcombe case.

“On both occasions we said the helicopter was near Beerwah. This was not the case.

“The fact that the location was misreported is totally unacceptable. We have launched a thorough investigation into all the facts surrounding these reports.

“Independent of the outcome of that investigation and the action which flows from it, Nine News affirms its unequivocal commitment to complete accuracy in News reporting and to maintaining the trust of our viewers. Nothing less will be tolerated.”

  1. @David – when it responds like a troll, argues like a troll, and baits like a troll – it’s a troll. 😉

Billy Goat Gruff needed on aisle FFS!

  2. or maybe david u cant answer a simple question..which is..is it ok to mislead the viewers by not telling the truth??? hmmmm ,maybe you cant understand the queens english?
so maybe should I be giving up on you David??

  3. @ David Knox ……I think you would first have to be able to write the Queens English….before you could understand it…..
Personally I just ignore certain posts….some folk are just looking for their 15 minutes….*sigh*
I think you need to install and ‘ignore’ button…like my chat room… *G*

  4. @ david…. news coverage is ment to be honest and true! stop making this into a joke now! if you think its ok for network news to lie to viewers… then i guess you will be backing craig n.

do u think its ok for any network to lie to their viewers? yes or no?

  5. OhYeah: I really don’t understand why it’s so hard to understand the Queen’s English, so let me break it down in simple terms.

    1. You can say Nine was right.
    2. You can say Nine was wrong.
    3. Just don’t go slamming other readers which is what you did when you said “you should be ashamed of yourself,” simply for having an opinion that differed from yours.

Kindly familiarise yourself with Comments Policy: “Write respectfully of others.”

  6. @ David… I beg to differ! if craig N thinks that it donesnt matter where u do a stand-up and prmote it to be at the sence when they are not well then good luck to him , and for you to be backing him up..well that just tells me and your readers here that you david dont care if 9,7,10,abc or sbs makes fault claims on where they are or how they mislead their viewers..
news has to be the truth.. if its not…. then its not news.

  7. @Kenny. Just the other week Channel 7 was reporting “live” during the 6PM news but was in broad daylight. That’s just one example I can think of off the top of my head.

I also have to wonder how many Channel 7 and the rest of 9’s competition have commented on all these forums today. Facts, right. Location, wrong. What a beat up over nothing.

  8. I hadn’t seen Nine News on the weekend but I did see Seven do a cross to Patrick Condren (also in a chopper) to report on the story – what did it add to the story? Absolutely nothing. What did we get to see? Condren, turning around with script in hand (script facing the camera in a large font) and darkness outside with a few specks of lights.

  9. @Justine & @James – Any Channel 7 examples you can share with us, other than “Barcelona”?.
Can’t excuse Nine on the basis that Seven “does it all the time”.
“Channel 9 has the balls to admit it” – but only when they were caught out, like with “toilet cam”.

  10. Really people….David was just reporting what happend…..
I think a little less hysterics and a little more sensitivity from bloggers….
Think what that family are going through right now….
I don’t watch commercial TV news or so called current affairs…you can never be sure of the truth factor….it tends to get a bit bent around to suit….no stress here!

  11. @ david… I dont think its fair to say who cares where they film a stand-up or whatever… they lied to the where-abouts of the location the reporter was..
as Craig said it was a knockoff shot of the jurno…. so be it but as the graphic says , they were on location when they were not.. so my reply was fair.. and ppl should care as they are ment to report the news and not lie and mis-lead… if the graphic said otherwise then this wouldnt be a story and it wouldnt be on your site as a story!.

    1. We’re not disagreeing that Nine was wrong, and it’s a legitimate story for this site. But to tell another reader “you should be ashamed of yourself” is an over-reaction and woefully unnecessary. Online discussion doesn’t mean we need to leave our manners at the modem.
