Syfy cancels new season in Eureka backflip

Update: US cable network Syfy grants producers one extra episode to wrap everything up.

Only last week it had been approved with six new episodes.

But today US cable network Syfy has done an about face and cancelled a sixth season of Eureka.

EW now reports the 13-episode fifth season that was ordered last year, which includes a holiday special, is going to be the final season.

A statement from Syfy said:

“After painstaking consideration, we have had to make the difficult business decision to not order a season six of Eureka. But Eureka is not over yet. There is a new holiday episode this December and 12 stellar episodes set to debut next year, marking its fifth season and six memorable years on Syfy. The 2012 episodes are some of the best we’ve seen, and will bring this great series to a satisfying end.

“We are very grateful to Bruce Miller and Jaime Paglia, their team of incredible writers, and an amazing cast and crew who have consistently delivered a series we continue to be very proud of. We thank the fans for their support of this show and know they will enjoy its final season in 2012.”

Last week a Syfy executive and said he was “hopeful” the drama series about a town of geniuses would continue beyond an additional six episodes.

  1. Syfy Orders Extra Series Finale Episode for Eureka..

  2. it seems every show I love gets cancelled

It cant be a massive expense to make and syfy has few “hits” on it’s hands nowadays

I like WH13 but it could go before Eureka

  3. According to producer Amy Berg, SyFy wanted the show to stay, but the bean counters at Comcast wanted severe budget cuts. Hopefully they’ll find a new home elsewhere, or get a DTV movie to wrap things up.

  4. Have only watched a few seasons of this show on crazy late night timeslots on Channel Ten, but enjoyed it immensely. Quite a funny and entertaining show about a town where everyone except the sheriff has above average intelligence. I wonder if it is the sort of show that could be shown on Eleven?

  5. Bad news folks – apparently the announcement came as they were 2 episodes off finishing S5. Not enough time to develop & script a proper sendoff.

Looks like we’ve got another Firefly on our hands….

  6. Nooooo!

Well at least there are 13 more eps after S4 finishes, that’s better that when they cancel a show after the last ep has aired.

@MuchoTB – I doubt the writers would have even finished planning S5 so I’m sure they will give fans a good send off.

  7. Lame decision by Syfy.

I only watched the first season of this show but to do an about flip when they told the fans the show had been renewed for a sixth season, is a massive d*ck move.

You’d hope the writers had enough forewarning to write a good ending for the series.
