More McKnockout on the way

Would you like fries with that? A second series of It's a Knockout is already in the pipeline.

A second series of It’s a Knockout is already in the pipeline, sources tell The Australian.

Last week the revived show pulled 1.03m viewers, one of TEN’s better numbers in recent weeks.

But as the newspaper details, the branded components of the show have helped it become profitable already.

Both TEN and McDonald’s paid FremantleMedia to produce the show under its new Spring production arm.

McDonald’s also paid TEN a fee for the branding rights, and for the advertising slots.

The show has a Team Macca’s competing as well as logos dotted around the arena in Kuala Lumpur.

“If this continues to rate as well as episode one it will be one of the most profitable shows on TEN,” a source told the newspaper.

Branded content is on the rise with Seven recently launching an entire channel devoted to shows that drive products in the datacasting channel TV4ME.

Other shows such as Celebrity Apprentice, MasterChef, Australia’s Next Top Model and The Block have all integrated sponsor products. Multichannels are also drawing upon branded content to drive new shows.

“We have editorial control but we are mindful of the advertiser’s investments,” FremantleMedia boss Ian Hogg said.

  1. I rather have 8 teams from each state and territory competing than a Maccas team. Having a maccad team is a load of bullshit but if it’s for charity I understand. Also film the show back in Australia, theres a lot of places in OZ they can film, eg Sydney Olympic Park or somewhere in Liverpool or Sutherland NSW.

  2. My suggestion for series 2 of IAK besides bring it back to Dural (you Fremantle Media Cheapskates!): we need a Hungry Jacks team to give Team Maccas a true rival.

  3. I actually don’t find the branding as bad as in “The Block”. At least it’s only one brand!! im enjoying it for a laugh on a Sunday night. HG is great. Charlie lovely and Brad was much better this week

  4. So this proves that shows can be profitable during summer?

How amazing.. now perhaps we don’t have to wait till March for new shows.. *rolls eyes*

  5. Seriously, does McDonald’s really need any extra promotion?? This is a disgrace, there should be laws against such blatant staining of Non-advertising content.

  6. Yay mum can I watch that fun show where they all run about and compete and stuff. Yay mum lets go to McSlimeys and get a helping of McSlime burgers! Mum, Mum! I’m stuck in the chair I’m too fat to get out! Call the Ambos mum, I’m having a coronary!

  7. Jeremy, Commercial TV has always been about making money. The programs are there just to keep the ads apart! If the program is one big ad then so much the better. Using a clown to sell fast food is a great marketting idea that kids don’t understand. Get ’em young and get ’em good!

  8. @D@GP: There’s already two McDonald’s at Ten working in the news department: Hamish McDonald (formally of 6pm/6:30 with George Negus) , and Brisbane newsreader Bill McDonald, so that branding could easily be applied.

I honestly think, series 2 of the re-incarnation of IAK (if it happens), should be produced in Australia.

  9. Seems like TV has just become one big business all about marketing, advertising and money making rather than its original purpose in entertaining viewers. The original It’s A Knockout didn’t need all these logos and product placements throughout, it was profitable because its primary purpose was to entertain viewers. I refuse to watch a show with all these deliberate product placements as it treats the viewers like fools.

  10. I thought the McDonalds branding etc would be worse than it actually was/is… the McDonalds team is still a bit too much though, but at least it’s all for charity.

  11. Well I like the show – great mindless fun for a Sunday night. But the McDonalds stuff makes me cringe though. Not enough to stop watching though, and I think that’s the point – they’ve found a sweet spot.
