Airdate: 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony

Sports fans wanting to see the Opening Ceremony Live will have to set their alarms -and the rest can wait for the replay.

Sports fans wanting to see the Olympic Opening Ceremony Live will have to set their alarms very early on Saturday July 28th (hopefully the rain will have stopped by then!).

It will screen on Nine and GEM from 5:30am – 9:30am AEST. But there will be a full Replay from 2-6pm on both channels.

Both the Opening and Closing Ceremonies are exclusive to Nine and hosted by Ken Sutcliffe, Eddie McGuire and Leila McKinnon.

Events will then begin at 6:30pm Saturday July 28 following Nine News.

The Opening Ceremony for the Olympic Games has a tradition as one of the most spectacular events in the world – a dazzling celebration of sport and culture showcased by the host nation. London will open the Games of the XXX Olympiad with another grand display at the new Olympic Stadium as it becomes the first city to host three Summer Olympics since the modern Games began in 1896.

Her Majesty the Queen will be greeted by IOC President Jacques Rogge and LOCOG chairman and dual Olympic champion Lord Sebastian Coe. A highlight of the Ceremony is the Parade of Athletes – a procession of the participating teams into the Stadium, nation by nation. It is expected that more than 200 nations will be represented.

Australia’s flag-bearer will be announced in the days before the Opening Ceremony. Among Nine’s special commentators are the former flag-bearers Andrew Gaze (Sydney 2000) and James Tomkins (Beijing 2008), Australia’s greatest champions in basketball and rowing respectively.

  1. Nine’s 3D Trial Olympics channel LCN95 is showing some old 3D content like highlights of 2010 NRL Grand Final, 2010 State Of Origin (at least here in Sydney).

I’m happy because this time my Beyonwiz PVR can play it correctly unlike the 2010 trial.

  2. David – there was talk that the opening and closing ceremonies were also going to be broadcast on a separate 3D channel.

Is this still the plan – or have us 3D TV owners been hoodwinked – again?

  3. hopefully the opening ceremony will be ad free
    does anyone know ????
Also if anyone from Ch9 are listening – we want to watch the sport, pl don’t flog your upcoming shows (mm BB) during the broadcast of the actual sport – use the commercial breaks only
Listening to the commentators bang on how good BB etc will be – pl don’t

  4. Is Channel Nine still refusing to give details about what events will be televised and when? A very lame tactic pioneered by Seven at the Beijing Olympics aimed at getting everybody to tune in longer and wipe out cherry picking. It didn’t work last time and won’t work this time.
