It will air in the UK in September but the third season of Downton Abbey won’t screen in Australia until February 2013.
Seven will hold off screening the series as it did for 2011’s Season Two which ended here last week.
That means will have to wait to see Shirley Maclaine going toe to toe with Maggie Smith.
Seven screens a Behind the Scenes special on Wednesday night at 8:30pm.

Not a problem, I’m done with Downton. Not even Maggie Smith is worth it anymore, season 2 exposed it’s soapy foundations for all to see and it’s time to give it the bone.
Good luck with it Seven, you’re welcome to your piece of dreck.
I heard that, it is still filming into August or post production work is still going on. But I like a lot of viewers would have liked to see it a couple of weeks later than the UK, but I guess Seven have nothing else of that standard lined up for the New Year, so they are hoping people will not buy it on DVD or BluRay. Mind you I am just watching series one again, enjoying it all over again !
It’s just that as the show has just finished here February really isn’t that long to wait.
You like to put the cat amongst the pidgeons, don’t you David. Enjoyed it this year, but happy to wait until next year for reasons already expressed.
Stevie: Not sure what you mean. Herald Sun ran it today and I tracked down extra info. Programming info is a huge part of this site.
Pretty sure 7 think they cna get away with this because a good percentage of the Downton Abbey audience are older and wouldn’t know that you can play BluRays from another country, buy Blu Rays over the internet or download from the internet. my parents and grandparents are avid viewers and certainly don’t know any of these things, and will just wait to watch until it’s on 7.
I realise there are plenty of alternatives to viewing a show, but out of curiosity I’m wondering why networks wait til a much later date to put something on,when they could televise it earlier. Is there any reasoning behind this?
Why should I pay for a DVD when I can wait and watch it for free? I’m not that desperate. Once I have seen a show I don’t need to watch it again so buying a DVD is just a waste of money to me.
Presumably this news has somehome come in from a parallel universe where the only way you can watch something is by seeing it on free to air TV? Given the obvious alternatives I suspect few if any Downton fans will bother to wait. But why do 7 think they can get away with this?
By delaying – even for 5 months another 200K+ audience will be eroded from the figures. Until those windows collapse they will keep pushing their viewers away. When they put their consumers (aka the audience) first they might find their revenue stabilise. It’s not just audience share that matters.
Most of you seem to assume it will air in February. 7 said it would return early 2012 last year when in fact it began in May. 7 are silly to stall this for the next 9 months. As others have said. Easy. Order the DVD which goes on sale in November in the UK.
Seven have told me February.
I like the show,so looks like i’ll be waiting til February to watch it.What I dont understand is why cant it be put on any sooner. Why do networks decide to do this?
Of course 7. And in other news water is wet.
I will be buying the DVD from the UK, there is no way I am waiting to February to see it.
You can always buy the Bluray/DVD from the UK, from 24 hours after the last episode airs.
They said February this year and they ended up playing Bones instead, delaying Downton Abbey until May
I was hoping it would be shown later on this year, but February isn’t too long to wait. It will be worth it.
These days you don’t have to wait for FTA to screen shows do you? Interesting to see what the delay does to the ratings.
