Curtain up on Smash

Just a quick reminder that Smash begins on Seven.... a real surprise package.

Just a quick reminder that Smash begins tonight on Seven.

If it wasn’t for a certain doco on SBS tonight I would have chosen this as the Daily Pick.

Having watched the whole series on Foxtel earlier this year, it turned out to be a real surprise package.

Megan Hilty and Katharine McPhee as two competing ‘Marilyns’ are fab, and the songs by Hairspray‘s Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman give this authenticity.

Then there’s Angelica Huston, Jack Davenport and watch out for Jaime Cepero as Ellis Boyd…. the ‘show within show’ is cleverly weaved across the series.

So much to like here.

9:30pm tonight on Seven.

  1. I would be interested to see how many people watch the SBS programme on catch up.
In my situation 8.30 is a noisy still looking for “Brain Candy ” time of the night where Winners and losers/Smash was just the fit,I then prefer to watch the Docos later on when the rabble has gone to bed.
I realize that when presented with a ratings hit SBS has to fit the perceived ratings time slot but for me Documentaries are better digested in a quieter surrounding and even though a viewer I would not be declared a rater.

  2. Thought it was great. Not especially into “the biz” (but I’m not into bikies either and I enjoy SoA) but it was a good drama with some well-written and -sung tunes. Will be back next week.

  3. Beckala: I actually praised Megan Hilty’s performance. I’m well aware of her success on Broadway and thought she was always the more accomplished performer, even when the behind-the-scenes characters are forcing Katharine McPhee down our throats.

  4. Couldn’t last more than five minutes of this show. Not into the whole “behind the scenes of a broadway show” premise. I expect the ratings for this show will be strong for the premiere and will flop in the weeks to come, very similar to how it went over at NBC in the States.

In contrast I watched Go back to where you came from on SBS and it was challenging, thought provoking, and intriguing. Two different genres, I know, but still…such a vastly superior program and a real eye opener

  5. Kirk, my feeling was that Megan Hilty was supposed to look like the weaker singer because of controversy surrounding Ivy’s audition (trying to avoid spoilers). She played Glinda in Wicked on Broadway so the girl can sing – a friend of mine saw her on Broadway and said she is much better on stage singing than she is on Smash, which makes me think it’s deliberate.

I loved it – such a different concept. As a musical theatre geek, I’m in heaven (on earth 😉 )

  6. The show was really promising I thought, based on the cast and the set-up. I won’t spoil it for anyone, but I was left impressed with the original songs (and anything sung by the amazing Megan Hilty) and felt a lot of the plot to be unoriginal and badly paced.
