Foxtel has secured the rights to new US drama series, Bates Motel, coming to Australia in May.

2013-03-20_1643Foxtel has secured the rights to new US drama series, Bates Motel starring Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore.

The show, which effectively serves as a prequel to Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, premiered in the US last night averaged three million viewers for A&E, with 1.599 million viewers in the adults 18-49 demographic and 1.633 million in adults 25-54. Variety reports it as the network’s most-watched original drama debut to date in key demos.

Produced by Carlton Cuse (Lost) and Kerry Ehrin (Friday Night Lights), the plot revolves around a dark, twisted backstory of Norman (Freddie Highmore) and his relationship with his mother, Norma (Vera Farmiga), and how she helped forge his life as a serial killer.

The Australian premiere is set for Sunday, May 26 on FOX8.

  1. This should have gone to SoHo. FOX8 are a general entertainment channel with an overload of tween programs (those produced and broadcast by ABC Family and The CW in the U.S.) while SoHo is dedicated to the more specialty drama programming of a higher quality that is potentially Bates Motel. Poor programming choice by Foxtel.

  2. Based on who’s involved it should be a winner. But the subject doesn’t interest me. I loved Psycho, but I don’t feel the need to know the back-story to Norman Bates.
