Christopher Abbott who plays Allison Williams’ boyfriend Charlie on Lena Dunham’s HBO series Girls has abruptly left the show.
The NY Times reports that Abbott and Dunham were having creative differences.
“They’ve just started work on Season 3, and Chris is at odds with Lena,” a source said.
“He didn’t like the direction things are going in, which seems a bit odd since the show put him on the map.”
Abbott’s representatives confirmed his departure: “(Chris) is grateful for the experience of collaborating with Lena, Judd (Apatow), and the entire Girls cast and crew, but right now he’s working on numerous other projects and has decided not to return to the show.”
Abbott has played Marnie’s (Allison Williams) on -gain, off-again boyfriend since season one. In the season-two finale, they even had a dramatic reunion, with Charlie telling her: “I love you: Maybe I’m an idiot for it, but I always have.”

Matt_897, I see what you mean. But we shouldn’t expect any guy to last forever because it’s all about the girls… Team Marnie! 😉
@ Stan, true but I was more referring to the whole silly season 2 storyline with him and with Marnie.
Sex And The City for the hipster set.
Matt_897, he already was a useless pushover from episode one, season one.
Almost can’t blame him given how much of a mess season 2 was at times and they basically made his character a useless pushover
If it was Lena Dunham & Judd Apatow having creative differences, that would be a big deal… Abbott’s just an actor, so good bye. It was nice while it lasted.
That’s a shame. I really enjoyed his character on the show and really love where he and marine left at the end of season 2.
Good luck with hosting the red carpet bit of the People’s Choice Awards.
