Fairfax Media today spills on one of TV’s well-known secrets: that Andrew Denton has taken 12 months out from his production company and may not return.
Zapruder’s Other Films, founded by Denton, merged with Cordell Jigsaw (producers Nick Murray and Michael Cordell) in February last year to become Cordell Jigsaw Zapruder (CJZ).
After the disappointment of Randling and the merging of the business, Denton decided to take 12 months out. Key partner Anita Jacoby had already exited.
Today Fairfax reports colleagues tip that a return was unlikely as the larger-scale corporate culture of the merged entity no longer resembled the culture he fostered at Zapruder.
Michael Cordell told Fairfax Media he anticipated Denton would make a decision about his ”future involvement in television” when his self-imposed sabbatical ended midyear.
Cordell confirmed that Denton remains a director and shareholder of CJZ. ”His DNA continues to be very much part of the company,” Cordell said.
CJZ is now Australia’s 5th biggest independent producer, behind FremantleMedia Australia, Southern Star, Shine Australia and ITV Studios and continues to announce new projects.
On the weekend it picked up Logies for Bondi Rescue and Go Back To Where You Came From.

He took the cash and is working on something else. People do like what he does and Randling was good just not a Big Mac in tv world.
Sad, because for a time there Denton was behind some very good Aussie telly.
It’s interesting to note, though, that television has moved on from Denton’s style and perhaps there is no demand for his output.
