US actor Paul Giamatti will join the cast of Downton Abbey, as Harold, the “maverick, playboy” brother of Lady Grantham (Elizabeth McGovern).
Giamatti is known for his US roles in Sideways, Saving Private Ryan, Truman Show, American Splendor, Cinderella Man and John Adams.
“We’re excited that Paul Giamatti will be joining us on Downton to play Cora’s brother Harold, the rather free-spirited uncle to Mary and Edith,” said Gareth Neame, from Carnival Films.
“We can’t wait to see him work alongside Shirley MacLaine, who are both sure to upset the Grantham’s apple cart in this year’s Christmas Day episode.”
Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Nigel Harman (EastEnders) will also feature in the fourth series.

@ stevie g – all the cast ? Really?
I suspect we have rather different metrics for assessing acting. Maggie Smith, yes. Hugh Bonneville – no. Elizabeth McGovern – not quite. The rest? I don’t think so.
While it’s good casting I don’t see the playboy type character for Paul Giamatti, I hope I’m wrong. I would have casted Kelsey Grammar or David Hyde Pierce or Jon Tenney.
Dr Rudi, If you had watched the show, you would know that all the actors in it are “seriously good”.
Love anything Giamatti does so really looking forward to his work on DA.
Didn’t know Cora had a brother. But anything to make the snooty Dowager make her funny comments. Should be good.
I’ve never watched an episode, however Giamatti is seriously good. I wonder if it would be like Robert Downey Jr (another seriously good actor) appearing in Ally McBeal where he clearly was just so much better than anyone else on screen.
