More time out for Wake Up producer Adam Boland

Wake Up executive producer Adam Boland is to take a second leave of absence from TEN's morning television schedule.

TEN Adam Boland 1Wake Up executive producer Adam Boland is to take a second leave of absence from morning television, further adding to the show’s struggles to make impact.

The Daily Telegraph reports Boland is set to take a further month away from the network, with Studio 10 exec producer Rob McKnight to assume control of both programmes once again. It’s not known if the move is related to Boland’s bipolar disorder.

Boland took time out from Wake Up in early November, just days after the show’s launch, and returned last week, excited by the prospect of work.

A TEN spokesperson said, “Adam Boland is taking a short break from Wake Up and Studio 10. Rob McKnight will take over the running of both shows until Adam returns. We are pleased with the quality of both shows and their initial ratings, which have been in line with our expectations. We also recognise that it will take time to establish our presence in the highly competitive breakfast and morning television market, and that we need to continuously work on improving both shows.”

So far the ratings for both shows have trailed their competitors by a country mile, despite some good feedback for Studio 10. Yesterday Wake up was 34,000 against Boland’s former Sunrise on 337,000. Studio 10 rated 54,000 to The Morning Show‘s 125,000.

Wake Up has since lost co-presenter Natasha Exelby and wound back on its push for local news after viewer feedback. Early Wake Up, a half hour coded from 6:30-7am is also gone from Monday, now coded as a two-hour programme 6:30 – 8:30am.

TEN CEO Hamish McLennan recently confirmed a long term commitment to the show.

“It’s a 2 year deal for us. In no way did we think we would get anything more than the numbers that we got. It’s an important deal for us and you look to the success of Today and Sunrise,” he said.

It’s been a tumultuous week in Breakfast TV with Today show exec producer Neil Breen also walking from the show after recent reports about tension and tempers.

  1. I love the beach background on the show .i dont live any where near the beach. One of the reasons i love sunrise is the shopfront studio being in martin place makes the show exciting people in the plaza the outdoor concerts its exciting. I cant stand the today show with its old fashioned studio set its boring . Look at the amercian breakfast shows for inspiration bowland .look at GMA its live from new york. Its no one in america. Wake up needs a new newsreader a new male host a sports reporter and kerri ann kenerley to give it ratings a huge leap up.

  2. Sorry to say this David, but the only folks who think it’s ok to put an ‘iconic’ backdrop to a national tv program are those who reside near that backdrop. For those of us in the west, seeing the sun rise over the ocean is just plain ridiculous and instantly identifies the program as being from ‘over there’ and the folks on that program don’t know anything about ‘over here’.

The backdrop also highlights that the program is on delayed broadcast as you can’t have simultaneous sunrises on the east and west coasts.

    1. Not the only people. I don’t live anywhere near it. I have the same aspect as you, watching the sun set in the ocean. But I don’t have a problem with a beach backdrop. In any case the times I have seen the show the cameras are mostly facing down the beach not out to the sun. Again, a Martin Place backdrop is really just as Sydney.

  3. I do agree with a lot that is being said, in particular having Matt Doran as co-host. In regards to the news, the studio is small therefore I don’t think moving the news to that particular studio would work.
But I have said before that something has to be done about the news because I really think the news from Melbourne is not working. Have everything in one city.

Yes, its needs to be seven days a week.
Why can’t they broadcast it from the studio at Ten, and the backdrop each day should be a random capital city like Monday: Sydney, Tuesday: Adelaide, etc.
