Kochie disagrees with Seven’s Corby deal

Updated: David Koch says no. Mark Llewellyn says no way to $2m.

david-koch-bbSunrise co-host David Koch is against Seven paying for a multi-million dollar deal with Schapelle Corby.

“I reckon we should have nothing to do with her as a network,” he said today.

“Bit late for that,” Samantha Armytage replied.

“I totally disagree with paying a convicted drug smuggler $2 million,” he continued.

“I know Indonesia is corrupt and all that sort of stuff, but she is convicted. So why pay the money?”

But Armytage said she was curious enough to watch.

During a Cash Cow giveaway Koch also asked a viewer, “How would you like to win some Mega Cool cash without spending time in an overseas jail?”

Updated: Meanwhile Seven News sports presenter Jim Wilson also tweeted on the veiled Corby accessory yesterday, which some have suggested was in place to protect Seven’s interview exclusive. Given his wife Chris Bath is host of Sunday Night, another tweet followed an hour later that was less harsh.

  1. The exact amount will be confidential. Which of course just means the media can multiply the figure by 2 or 3 times like they normally doe.

Fenley is claiming Seven has paid $2m or more today. Willesse said speculation of $2m was ”
crazy…way silly”. Willesse stated that they haven’t yet agreed to terms.

Since the Corbys had no intention of talking to Channel 9, there was no bidding war and Seven were able have access and negotiate, because they don’t need the interview till Sunday.

There is nothing wrong with people selling something if they want to.

The only restriction is that there are some Australian laws preventing people from profiting from their crimes in which case the Government just confiscates the money.

  2. Nathan – completely agree with you. I was actually talking about the ambulance incident with Koch last night – a friend of mine was in London at the time and had no idea. If you want to be the beacon of journalistic integrity, you might want to walk the walk – jumping into an ambulance of a guy who has spent days trapped underground is not the way to go about it…

  3. To David Koch save the racist Indonesian bashing remarks to yourself. It is the Seven Network who are paying Corby & you & your show are stage managing this ‘controversy’ to pay for it.
I am in Indonesia now on holidays & even though I am not in Bali (I am in Batam) the case has generated a lot of media interest here.
But from what I gather the same interest is not shown by Aussies (as Nine can attest to). Lets hope that the interview tanks also.
The money could have gone a long way in Indonesia to help the victims of drugs in Indonesia or Australia.

  4. I also think Kochies comments were deliberate to help 7 create publicity for the Corby interview. It worked. His comments were on all major news websites and all other media. Brilliant stuff by 7. This thing will rate 5 million, no problem.
