Australian Rules footy becomes a step towards rehabilitation for inmates in Western Australia.

2014-04-16_1420This week ABC2 begins a doco series, Outside Chance, as Australian Rules footy becomes a step towards rehabilitation for inmates in Western Australia.

This five-part documentary series, narrated by Andrew Krakouer, follows a ragtag team of prison inmates who join a ground breaking rehabilitation program. They begin a search for redemption through Australian Rules footy on a journey toward the WA Amateur Football League grand final. And a second chance at life on the outside.

Under the scrutiny of a wary public and the watchful eyes of prison officers, the team must train hard and play even harder. Any foul on the field means more than a free kick; it might mean being thrown off the team, being pulled from the league altogether or worse.

They’re on a mission to change their lives for the better, but will this team of crims truly be accepted by the community and within themselves?

9:30pm Tuesday, 22 April ABC2.

  1. This looks interesting. I assume Andrew Krakouer is an inspiration to many of the players, having himself been given a second chance at football through Swan Districts and then Collingwood. His contribution to the 2010 WAFL Grand Final was far greater than you could ask of any player, he was simply amazing. All the best to him, whatever his future may be and good luck to the players too.

  2. Read a story about this program in today’s Canberra Times TV guide. One of the interesting facts gleaned is that because the inmate players don’t have any distractions, such as public drinking and partying, all they do inside is train- which makes them formidable opponents.
