The Molly Meldrum telemovie, being produced by Mushroom Pictures, is now extended into a series for Seven.
Based on an unpublished biography by Jeff Jenkins, Sam Johnson is tipped to portray the music guru.
The Secret Life of Us and Rush star is Molly’s preferred favourite for the role and the pair have been meeting. But he is yet to get the green light from Seven and producer John Molloy.
Meldrum has previously been portrayed, at various times, by Stephen Blackburn, Michael Veitch and, most recently in INXS: Never Tear us Apart, Grant Piro.
“I’m so flattered Molly sees me in the role,’’ Johnson told News Corp.
The series will follow Meldrum through his early years writing for Go Set magazine, to music producing, Countdown and Hey Hey it’s Saturday. Copyright limitations are bound to be a challenge.
But it was Meldrum’s 2011 accident that led to an outpouring of affection for him and induction into the Logies Hall of Fame.
The series is set to screen on Seven in 2015.

Perhaps if they cast Daryl Summers to play his own cameo roll the HHIS rights would become cheaper ?
I think Summers-Carroll hold the copyright to “Hey Hey..” – just like Crawford owns Homicide, Div.4 etc., which WIN-owned Crawford is now flogging at ridiculous prices. Given budget cuts I think ABC Sales quite happy to sell Countdown clips.
Can’t see Nine allowing them to use Hey Hey in the series.
I would rather see this on the ABC where they could have access to all the archival footage from Countdown.
