Rumour: Melissa Doyle for Sydney News?

As Seven trails Nine News, there is chatter that Melissa Doyle may join Mark Ferguson in Sydney.

Screen Shot 2014-05-11 at 1.02.04 am.jpgRumours have been circulating this week of Melissa Doyle potentially joining Mark Ferguson at the Seven News desk in Sydney.

Doyle recently lost her 7pm 7TWO news service but remains with the 4pm network news and senior correspondent duties.

But Seven’s 6pm news with Ferguson, who replaced Chris Bath earlier this year, is trailing Nine’s Peter Overton.

Seven’s head of news and current affairs Rob Raschke denied Doyle was set to join Ferguson, but admitted: “It’s not a crazy idea.

“At this stage we’re happy with just Mark there and I think it’s working.”

Seven has also been losing to Nine News in Melbourne where Peter Mitchell trails Peter Hitchener.

Last year Nine snatched back the national news crown from Seven after several years of leadership by the latter.

  1. didn’t we see this coming…..Fergo was a bad choice…we all know that..if Mel goes to 6pm news they need a strong male to compliment not Mark. I would rather see Chris back. She has personality and relates to people. and being in regional NSW would like to see 9 news on Go or Gem instead of NBN

  2. Why Seven continue to persist with Mark Ferguson is beyond me. He is a wooden boring newsreader and is not working for them. Can’t they see that already? If they want to go all out put Mel Doyle and Chris Bath. Personally Chris Bath should never have been ousted to Friday/Saturday and Seven should return her to the weekday 6pm chair where she belongs.

However this isn’t Seven’s main problem. Its the bulletin that is the problem. They need to fix the brand and the content. They need to smarten it up again. They need to take it back to the Ian Ross era of News in terms of content and how the bulletin worked so well.

  3. Is this a case of justifying paying her a large salary while she has been reading the low rating afternoon news. Do they really think she is going to fix Seven news in Sydney?

  4. I think the Melbourne problem is easy to fix. 9 wins because their male reporters are sexier than 7s with Cory Norris, Douglas Beattie, and that new guy mark mcgougan. If 7 lifted their stakes in that regard I think we would see a lift in ratings.

  5. “…is trailing Nine’s Peter Overton” That’s a massive understatement. Bath was averaging a 35k deficit. In the 3 months since Ferguson took over, that deficit has blown out to 145k+ some days. Why on Earth replace Bath with someone who was dumped from 9’s 6pm bulletin because he didn’t resonate with audiences? Chris Bath was used as a scapegoat. She wasn’t the issue, terrible content was. Now 7 are faced with terrible content and a beige presenter.

Doyle has proved herself as a gun reporter since leaving Sunrise, but as a newsreader, she lacks authority. Sorry 7, she’s not the answer. Man up, admit you stuffed up and reinstate Bath.
