Update: Eurovision Song Contest

SBS has surprisingly announced that Semi Final 2 of Eurovision will be fast-tracked to Australia.

ev14SBS has surprisingly announced that Semi Final 2 of the Eurovision Song Contest will be fast-tracked to Australia, airing at 7:30am Friday May 9th local time.

This is the Semi Final that includes an appearance by Jessica Mauboy.

Of the 3 television events, it is the only one hand-picked for the express viewing.

The broadcasts are now as follows:

Friday May 9
7:30am Semi Final 2
8:30pm Semi Final 1

Saturday May 10
8:30pm Semi Final 2

Sunday May 11
7:30pm Final

The difference between the Friday morning broadcast and the Saturday evening broadcast is that the Saturday broadcast will have the edited pieces to camera and behind the scenes features and interviews with Julia Zemiro and Sam Pang.

The Friday morning will just have their commentary.

  1. Utter bollocks, michaeltv – we’re not waning at all! This year I’ve found more interest and unashamed “Fan-Girling” than ever before! Get into the party spirit, why doncha???

It would be so huge to host Eurovision Down Under!!

Eurovision is one of the better rating shows on SBS as it is shown right now.
Why lose ratings by showing it live/near live in the early hours (when ratings are 6pm-midnight) when it rates what it does.

Even the early broadcast on SBS isn’t live. It’s 2.5 hours delayed (I assume even more delayed to the non-AEST states).

Live is at 5am AEST. The concert itself should be all over by around 7am.

I guess SBS deems the Korean, Japanese, Hong Kong, Chinese and Hindi News a tad more important than Eurovision.

  4. Six of the Finalists are already determined.

I wonder if there might come a day when Australia might ‘bid’ to host the event as a one-off given our collective passion for Eurovision and a multi-cultural society to embrace all the competitors and their fans?

  5. Can’t wait for Eurovision. I look forward to it every year. Mind you having the first semi final air before the second is kind of strange because potentially you will know the finalists at the end of semi-final 2 before getting a chance to watch semi-final 1. You would think they could air it the night before to avoid this.

  6. So if you don’t want to know who is the final, don’t watch the Friday’s live Eurovision, as they show you the places of the previous semi-final and at the end, the final line up.

Why not just show it all live.

  7. Lauren,
You can watch any of the concerts either live or any time you choose after each event on Eurovision’s website.

There’ll be no commentary, but also no ads. Just the pure concert as if you were there 🙂

  8. It’s a good start, but why they don’t fast-track the final is beyond me. After having the result spoiled one to many times I put myself on a media blackout. No TV, no internet, no radio. I manage most years, but am a little nervous about the need to venture out for Mother’s Day this time!

  9. So, the second semi is airing before the first semi. Very bizarre. Anyway, I’m flying out to Copenhagen this afternoon, so I’ll be seeing it live. Yay! : )
