Nine News adds new Qld bureau, ex-TEN man joins Nine Adelaide.

2 additions to Nine News resources in Queensland and South Australia are good news.

2014-06-17_0038Two pieces of news from Nine News today, with a new bureau being set up west of Brisbane and TEN’s former Adelaide news director joining Nine as Deputy News Director.

Nine is opening a “hot desk” bureau in the Ipswich suburb of Springfield to be operated by four staff members, added to its already existing Gold Coast bureau.

“This bureau has been 12 months in the planning and we’re excited to be finally expanding our news service into this important region,” said Mike Dalton, Director of Nine News Queensland.

“When news breaks in the Ipswich or Toowoomba regions, whether it be flooding, bushfires or events of community importance, viewers will see it first on Nine, with Nine News positioned to broadcast the most immediate and comprehensive information and images direct from Springfield.”

Media students from the University of Southern Queensland’s Springfield campus will also have access to its resources.

Kylie Blucher, Nine Queensland Managing Director, said: “The Springfield bureau is a major part of Nine’s commitment to the people of Ipswich and our wider Queensland audience. We’re looking forward to being involved with Springfield community and a voice for the region to tell its stories.

“The incorporation of USQ students into the bureau also allows us to work with the university on developing the journalists of tomorrow and give them practical experience in news gathering.”

The Springfield bureau is located at 145 Sinnathamby Blvd, Springfield Central, and will be operational from late June 2014.

Meanwhile in Adelaide, Jeremy Pudney joins as Deputy News Director from July 14th.

Pudney has been TEN’s Director of News in Adelaide since 2011 and has worked for TEN since 2000.

“Jeremy comes with an impressive résumé across print and television and will be an important addition to the team,” SA Director of News, Tony Agars said.

“He was a strong rival for many years and now brings his keen news sense to Nine. I look forward to what his experience will add to the newsroom.”

  1. Makes no sense to me either, joey69. It almost feels like someone is deliberately running TEN into the ground……in preparation for a fire-sale, maybe?

  2. Debt is not an issue as long as you can service it. This is why Australia has maintained its AAA credit rating despite there supposedly being a “budget black-hole”.

Nine has plenty of eyeballs watching its ads and can sell airtime at a higher premium than Ten is able to. Their turnover is significantly greater giving them a larger revenue stream, some of which can be directed to new initiatives whilst still meeting their other obligations.

Nine News usually wins Syd and Mel, while Per and Ade are lost causes for the foreseeable future. Brisbane and surrounds is the current battle-ground.

  3. Channel Seven announced over the weekend that they too will be opening a news bureau in Ipswich within the next “few weeks”.

I get that it is a growing city but given the big studios are less than 30 minutes drive… not sure if there will be enough news to justify the move.

  4. Tv land is a funny beast. Nine has just refinanced $850 million in debt the other day, and seems to be spending money on new news infrastructure. Yet TEN has very little debt 40 million at last count with 200 million overdraft facility if required. And yet it is sacking top quality news staff . Makes no sense to me.
