Rumour: Now WIN jobs go in Queensland

More newsroom cuts appear likely at WIN's Queensland bureaus Rockhampton, Wide Bay and Mackay.

2014-06-19_2310Following yesterday’s report of job cuts to WIN Television in Wollongong, TV Tonight now hears of more newsroom cuts at Queensland bureaus Rockhampton, Wide Bay and Mackay.

Staff were understood to have been advised yesterday, amid suggestions it is planning a national news service based from Wollongong NSW and potentially a playout Centre in its Maroochyodore QLD hub.

With limited job opportunities in the bush, few staff are willing to go on the record over conditions with the regional broadcaster.

WIN Television is yet to respond to questions put forward by TV Tonight.

Update: A WIN spokesperson said  “The WIN Network has redeployed more than half of the staff affected as part of a general restructuring of operations into other areas of its business. The move is designed to ensure the efficiency of the network in delivering key services to its viewers in a constantly changing media environment. As part of the move, some staff members have accepted a voluntary redundancy package.  Recent speculation about our news bureaus in Queensland is inaccurate and completely unfounded.”

  1. If I was working at Prime, WIN or Southern Cross, I wouldn’t hold out much hope of having a job once the media ownership laws are relaxed.

Usually the only staff members left after such buy-ups are the local sales staff.

  2. If Charles Dickens were alive today he would be writing a narrative where working conditions relate to Win Television employees. I feel sorry for any young person trapped into the Win job cycle – the industry is in a mess but there is dubious value in working for an organisation like this one. They appear to offer very little to the TV landscape – perhaps behaviour like this will inspire more strict regulation?
