Sunday Night elbowed aside for X Factor

It's their flagship current affairs show, but Seven again puts Sunday Night on the backburner for The X Factor.

2014-06-19_2122There’s no edition of Sunday Night tonight now that X Factor is back to live Sunday shows.

Once again the current affairs show takes a back seat to Reality Television on Seven.

Tonight X Factor is scheduled to finish at 9:15pm, at a whopping 2:45 hours on air, followed by Highway Patrol and Castle.

In February when Chris Bath was replaced by Mark Ferguson, Seven CEO Tim Worner talked up the importance of Sunday Night.

“Sunday Night is the flagship program from our News and Public Affairs division, hosted by Chris since the first edition five years ago. Chris is a big part of the success of the program and is perfectly placed to lead Sunday Night into its expanded series in 2014,” he said.

But when there are popstars waiting in the wing, exactly how is the show expanded in 2014?

In contrast Nine also has Reality dominating its schedule with The Block and The Voice: Kids.

Those are set to air at 9:10pm yet Nine is retaining 60 Minutes in the line-up.

  1. IMO it has nothing to do with X Factor and everything to do with the fact that Chris is away this weekend (we’ve had Mel presenting in Sydney) and 60 Minutes is running an unbeatable episode.

I don’t really understand why Highway Patrol has been slotted in there at ‘9:15’ though — seems like it would be far more sensible to flow straight into Castle given that X Factor will probably run through to at least 9:30.

  2. I’m guessing that they weren’t able to also get an angle on “Baby Gammy” to try to spoil 60 Minutes.

Pretty sure neither program following either X Factor or The Voice: Kids will start at their advertised times.

  3. It was also stated Chris was stepping aside for Ferguson so she could spend more time with her son. However, she has been tripping all over the world for Sunday Night. Goes to show the excuse for replacing her with Ferguson was a load of rubbish.

Time to move Chris back to the number one newsreader role in the hope she can salvage the bulletin and cut Sunday Night back to as the quality has really declined. Get back to investigative journalism and stop carrying stories over to the following week.

  4. In the past I have hated that SN takes a break. It usually goes off air just as it is hitting its stride and rating 1.6mil. But this time the show really needs a break. The quality has declined sharply, and it is reflected in the ratings. They need to regroup.
