BBC edits Doctor Who same-sex kiss for Asian markets

BBC acknowledges editing Dr Who in order to comply with broadcast regulations in Singapore.

2014-08-30_0056The same-sex kiss seen in the season return of Doctor Who was cut for broadcasts in Asia, in order to comply with broadcast requirements in Singapore.

BBC edited the scene which broadcast into Hong Kong, South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore due to regulations in Singapore.

The broadcast code in Singapore, where the BBC Entertainment feed for Asia is transmitted from, has strict rules on “information, themes or subplots on lifestyles such as homosexuality, lesbianism, bisexualism, transsexualism, transvestism, pedophilia and incest.”

“In order to comply with broadcast regulations in Asia where our BBC Entertainment channel airs, BBC Worldwide made a brief edit to the first episode of Doctor Who series eight, but did so without detracting from the storyline,” BBC Worldwide said.

The cut scene shows Silurian Madame Vastra locking lips with her human wife Jenny Flint in an attempt to save her life.

British media watchdog OfCom recently said it had received 6 complaints about the scene but that it did not breach broadcasting codes.

  1. I had no problem with the kiss, what i thought was odd was how Many times they forced the face they were married into the conversation. It was said like 10 times.

  2. I watched the episode to see what the fuss was. Couldn’t see a problem. Maybe some people don’t like lizards. Probably post traumatic distress from the series V in the 1980’s.
