ABC gets Grubby with new dirtgirlworld special

Eco-friendly kids' characters are set to return in a new special for ABC.

2014-10-23_1254ABC has commissioned a new 30-minute live action special featuring characters from dirtgirlworld.

Get Grubby TV sees gum-boot wearing dirtgirl (Maree Lowes) and her rakish recycling friend scrapboy (Michael Balk) with  a cast of 3-11 year old ‘greenthumbs’, most of whom were selected from more than 100 video auditions submitted by fans.

dirtgirlworld, which ran for 52 episodes from 2009-11, used 3D CGI animation combined with photomontage for its eco-friendly storytelling.

“It’s great to have the gang back together again” says co-creator and producer Cate McQuillen “just in time for the summer, when kids need to explore everything the big world outside has to offer.”

A mystery guest will take the story to new places in a celebration of all things outside from growing from veggies in a community garden to making ‘pies’ in a specially-designed ‘mud kitchen’ at a child care centre.

“It’s true, we do want kids to have heaps of fun in the great outdoors” adds McQuillen, a former primary school teacher, “but there’s a really serious message too. Research shows that playing outside is good for children’s physical development, reduces the symptoms of ADHD and improves self-confidence and academic performance. We think washing a pile of dirty clothes is a small price to pay for healthy, smart and happy kids!”

Get Grubby TV is being filmed on location in Northern New South Wales this week.

Producers mememe are supported by Mick Jones and Linda Ung from Sydney’s LitUp Digital and a production team of local artists, set builders, playscape experts and community groups who have generously stepped forward to support the production. Composer Hewey Eustace will provide new music.

It is set to broadcast later this year on ABC4Kids.
