Logie broadcast accused of snubbing Neighbours

Plans to pay tribute to Neighbours' 30th year hit a snag. “Nine simply wouldn’t engage."

TEN is (rightly) unhappy that Neighbours will not receive appropriate recognition of its 30 years on Australian TV during the TV Week Logie Awards.

TEN was hoping for a tribute during the broadcast or that Jackie Woodburne and Alan Fletcher present an award.

“Nine resisted all of our appeals,” an insider said this week. “Nine simply wouldn’t engage.”

Instead it will have to settle for acknowledgment during the pre-show Red Carpet, which falls outside the official ceremony.

Executive producer Brent Williams told News Corp: “Neighbours has reached a fantastic milestone this year with 30 years on air. We will be featuring interviews with longstanding members of the cast as well as nominees from the show during the Logies broadcast to acknowledge the contribution they have made to Australian TV.”

Most presenting teams in recent years have featured individuals from opposing networks.

But it would be disappointing not to give ample airtime to our longest running drama series.

This year the Logies inducts Home and Away into the Hall of Fame, but TEN’s show was already inducted some years ago.

  1. I feel like TEN should held off their Neighbours Anniversary special until Logie night and aired it an hour before the Logie broadcast begins. They would have been able to capitalise on a lot of awareness about the show. Even still, they should repeat it on Logies night, 6.30 on 11.

  2. I guess the only way Neighbours’ 30th anniversary will get acknowledged at the Logies is if Olympia Valance wins Most Popular New Talent or one of Ten’s presenters mention the show or whoever’s accepting the Home and Away Hall of Fame Logie gives Neighbours a shout out!

  3. Point No. 1: The Logies are rubbish. There’ve got nothing to do with the quality of a TV show or performer (just look at past winners). The Logie awards should be disbanded.
Point No. 2: As far as the acknowledgment of Neighbours and Home and Away, well these programs are cheap poor quality soap/drama and not at all deserving of any award.

  4. It is petty but Nine owns the rights and can do whatever they wish on the night.

Let’s all just hope the major awards all go to non-Nine shows and personalities.

A lot of the industry awards will go to ABC and SBS – and hopefully Carrie or Asher walk away with the Popular Gold.

Seriously – the Gold that went to Stefanovic, Blake and last year’s Cam were absolute jokes.

    1. Andy Lee is nominated for Gold. That stunned me. So, over the past 12 months he has been the most popular male on our FTA TV screens? I rather doubt it and frankly I can see more reason for Cam.

However, if 9 are choosing to make it their particular network’s awards then the name should be changed and there should not be any suggestion the awards are Aussie’s version of X awards overseas.

My beef with the awards is partially the lack of true representation but also because of the joke people like Stefanovic make of them. Will we have yet another year when someone turns up to breakfast television still half-cut? That joke’s wearing a bit thin isn’t it.

  5. It’s a shame that they couldn’t spare a couple of minutes to pay tribute during the awards or at least have a couple of Neighbours stalwarts present an award. No wonder the credibility or value of the logie awards keeps getting a battering every year.

  6. I liken the Nine Network to a fat, spoilt brat that runs off with all the candy at the end of a party.
The logies and Nine have become a joke.

      1. TVF’s comment below summed it really well. Fair enough Nine paid lots of money and as delicate as the balancing act is, at the end of the day, it is not about them.

  7. It’s just a petty decision by Nine to damage a competitor. Neighbours only has 300k viewers on a secondary channel so it’s not even really a threat to them.

  8. Typical of the Nine Network, or should I say The Big Bang Theory network. Kudos to Ten and Seven for having two long running programmes with Neighbours and Home And Away.

Why is it that the Nine Network are so petty.

  9. This is why the Logies should be on a different network. So Home and Away gets tribute for 27 years but Neighbours doesn’t get one for 30 years!

    1. Neighbours did have a tribute previously, as stated in the article.
Regardless, pretty shabby behavior from 9, but I wouldn’t expect any less, they are pretty desperate at the moment!

      1. That tribute was for 20 years. I’m taking about 30 years which is a huge milestone for Australian drama and should be honoured at the Logies – “Australian TV’s night of nights”!

  10. Maybe Nine is upset that they don’t have a drama lasting five years let alone 30! What’s the longest running drama 9 have ever produced?

    1. I think Water Rats was a good 9 drama, but McLeods daughters ran longer!
They treated dramas badly in the 90’s and things haven’t changed for 20 years! House husbands has aired on different nights

    2. So true! Nine don’t have a good history with drama shows that could possibly be the reason… They really don’t have any good long running drama shows. House husband’s is probably the only popular one and which is quite new.

  11. This is why the Logies needs to be shared amongst the FTA channels, Nine are in almost total control with them being the broadcaster. It’s time to shake it up with new producers, an actual host, better aligned catagories and less international guests. This year I will again PVR it, and then FF through the red carpet (who cares who’s wearing what) and then FF through most, if not all of the performances. Remember last year when they didn’t even properly aknowlege Better Homes and Garden’s win? Its jelousy and a wanting of control.

  12. Hence why it’s time for the Logies to be taken off Nine for a few years and start passing it around the other networks. Similar to how the Emmys do it in the US.
