Report: Stan tops most hours of streaming content

The big three have been ranked by the amount of hours of content they are offering to Aussies.

How many hours of content do the three big SVOD players have for Australian subscribers?

According to content-focused app company Gyde:

Stan has 6089 hours.
Netflix has 5748 hours.
Presto has 4009 hours (Presto Movies / Presto TV).

Fairfax reports while Stan has the most local Australian content at present, Netflix Australia appeared to be closing the gap in terms of total hours of video, with new content being added weekly since its launch on March 24. Stan is joint owned by Fairfax and Nine while Netflix is well short of equivalent catalogues offered to US subscribers due to licensing deals.

Gyde found Presto has a strong suit in its catalogue composition, particularly towards comedy and family entertainment.

“As Australians start to experience the power of these video-on-demand services, they’re likely to find that just subscribing to one service will not satisfy their entertainment needs,” Gyde product lead and co-founder Andrew Julian suggests.

“It will not be a winner-takes-all situation for the platforms and they must compete to ensure they’re part of that mix.”

  1. Thanks for the website David, that’s awesome! Some of the SVODs are shy about giving details about their catalogues – with Stan you have to sign up for a free month trial before you can see what’s on there!

I love Netflix and can’t believe how cheap it is! It’s going to pay for itself just with Orange and House as I won’t have to purchase them anymore. Some shows are a season behind, such as Brooklyn Nine Nine or older like Weeds but I only have about 10 shows that I *have* to watch as soon as each ep is released. I enjoy binge watching shows that have concluded, just finished Oz yesterday.

I would try Presto and Stan but it needs to be unmetered and I’m also turned off them because I want to watch on Apple TV.

  2. Having tried all three, have to say that not only does Stan have more content, but it is better too – Better Call Saul, The Bridge (original), Fargo, Hannibal, Orphan Black….

But as others have said, the issue with Stan is its user experience – not available on enough devices, not as smooth an interface / too many tech issues.

  3. Netflix beats them all when it comes to device availability. Not only is content king, but App availability as well. Who would ever consider Presto with its lack of HD and nothing of a recent release date nature?

  4. I won’t consider Stan until they get some real apps as I refuse to cast.
I won’t consider Presto until it streams at greater than 480p
So that just leaves Netflix which I love but would like to see more classic content added. I’ve been watching what’s been added daily and a lot of it has been children’s programs 🙁
