Hot on the heels of Seven’s success with TV shows about Cats and Dogs, SBS has now scheduled two series about four-legged friends.

It will air 2 x 3 part documentaries, back to back on Monday nights later this month.

Cats Uncovered
Shattering common myths and answering tantalising questions about their secret lives, this is the definitive guide to your cat.

Aloof. Disdainful. Vicious. Or friendly, fluffy balls of fur who just want to be loved. Opinions on cats tend to differ though one thing is sure – they occupy a very special place in the hearts of many. But how much do we really know about them? This fascinating and revealing series investigates every aspect of the lives of this often- misunderstood species.

Making use of the latest bespoke technology, militarygrade GPS trackers, x-rays, cat-cams and specialised photography, it explores how a cat learns to function as a wild animal in a domestic world; the extraordinary ways in which cats are able to use their senses to interpret their environment; and the remarkable feline skill of inter-species communication and co-operation.

Discover how a cat’s remarkable body, brain and senses – evolved to make their wild ancestors the perfect predator – are coping in the modern world, and how this naturally solitary animal has developed a unique interspecies understanding that’s enabled it to infiltrate our social groups and become modern humans’ greatest animal friend. Just don’t tell the dogs.

Experiments also form an important part of the series and are used to put certain theories to the test. Find out if cats really do always land on their feet, whether their instinct to hunt is something they are born with, and why cat and dogs approach the world in an entirely different way.

Monday 21 September, 7.30pm on SBS

The Wonder of Dogs
No other land mammal displays such dazzling diversity as man’s best friend. It’s hard to believe that a Great Dane and a Chihuahua belong to the same species, yet they do. In The Wonder of Dogs we celebrate and interrogate the dog in all its spectacularly different and unlikely forms.

From ancient predator to household pet, the evolution of dogs is arguably the greatest success story in the animal kingdom. We chart the remarkable journey of the domestic dog from one common ancestor to over 200 breeds we see in Britain today, and discover that hidden in their DNA are reflections of our own human history.

This series takes a snapshot of the dog population of a typical English village – Brightwell in Oxfordshire, and examines the huge range of breeds in one single place. Presenters Kate Humble and Steve Leonard, together with leading experts, put the village dogs through a range of tests and explore why there’s so much variety within a single species. And historian Ruth Goodman unearths the extraordinary stories behind some of the world’s most iconic breeds.

Premieres Monday 21 September, 8.30pm on SBS (3-Part Series)

  1. The perfect demonstration contrasting low-brow with high-brow entertainment. Sadly, the people who watch cat and dog videos on TV are unlikely to be inclined to make the effort to switch over to SBS to watch these.
